"He's not," Cui Xisheng insisted stubbornly.

"I think he cares about you. He waited for you at the door and even found an excuse to ask me about your condition."

"If he really cared about me, I wouldn’t be feeling this awful right now. Director, I don’t want to see him, and I don’t want him to know I’m pregnant. Please change my room."

"He already knows you're in the hospital. If he wants to see you, we have no right to stop him. Changing rooms won’t help."

"Just don’t tell him. Otherwise, I’ll discharge myself and find a place near the hospital. If anything happens, I’ll come to you."

"Don’t go through all that trouble. I’ll block him for you," Hao Ren said. He was about to continue persuading Cui Xisheng but stopped when he saw how awful he looked in the rearview mirror. Sighing, Hao Ren agreed for now.

These two young people were clearly having some sort of conflict, but Hao Ren could tell that Meng Jiangtian still cared about Cui Xisheng.

Back at the hospital, Cui Xisheng was placed in Room 505, right next to 506.

Cui Xisheng stared at Hao Ren with a dubious expression. People often said pregnancy made you dumber—was the director testing that theory on him?

"Don’t worry. VIP rooms aren’t easy to enter. Even though it’s next door, no one can come in without your permission."

Although still dissatisfied, Cui Xisheng had no choice. He was dependent on the hospital now, and Hao Ren was even covering his medical bills. He didn’t argue further.

Cui Xisheng stayed in the hospital, with morning sickness hitting hardest at dawn.

Hao Ren checked on him every day, arranged special pregnancy meals, and used every medical technique he knew, but nothing could stop Cui Xisheng from growing thinner.

Severe anemia left him bedridden and drowsy most of the time, sometimes sleeping for an entire day.

Hao Ren wanted to study the virus in Cui Xisheng’s blood, but his anemia was so extreme that his body could barely function, let alone provide extra blood for research.

Cui Xisheng woke up groggily, disturbed by the commotion outside his room.

Lately, the hospital had been overcrowded with patients, their eerie, inhuman screams making it hard for him to sleep.

Thirsty, Cui Xisheng sat up slowly, holding his head. He always needed water after waking up. Hao Ren kept a bottle of warm water by his bedside.

As he took a few sips, Hao Ren pushed the door open, his face grim.

Seeing Cui Xisheng awake, Hao Ren forced a smile. "You’re up. How do you feel today?"

"The same as usual. What’s going on outside?"

"Another crazy patient. There’s likely an epidemic outbreak. Stay in your room and don’t wander around—you don’t want to catch anything."

"I'll give you some IV fluids. I have to get back to work. Things are hectic right now, so take care of yourself."

"What kind of infection is it? They sound terrifying." Cui Xisheng’s hand was already bruised from repeated injections. Hao Ren carefully found a spot on his wrist for the IV.

"Sudden outbreaks like this take time to study. We won’t know what it is right away. Just stay in your room—it’s chaotic out there.

Lock your door. If someone knocks, check through the peephole first. This disease is aggressive—the infected go mad and try to bite people.

Their skin turns a ghastly gray, like a corpse. Be extra careful before opening the door."

"That serious?"

"It’s eerie, to say the least. Anyway, when the IV is done, just remove it yourself—I might not have time to come back."
