Hao Ren rushed out the door. The moment he opened it, Cui Xisheng heard a chilling, wailing sound from outside.
The more he thought about it, the more terrifying it seemed. Cui Xisheng got out of bed, pushed the IV stand, walked to the door, and only felt a little more secure after locking it.
Since he didn’t dare to remove the IV himself, Cui Xisheng also didn’t dare to go back to sleep. Instead, he took out his phone and started browsing gossip news. However, today’s trending topics were different—over a dozen of them were all about the same thing.
A new virus was spreading worldwide. Those infected would experience rapid physical deterioration, leading to the swift death of all their cells and, ultimately, rotting away.
There were several photos online. Out of curiosity, Cui Xisheng glanced at them, only to be utterly disgusted by the sight of the decayed flesh and blood.
A wave of nausea surged up his throat. He quickly covered his mouth and rushed to the bathroom with his IV stand, vomiting uncontrollably.
By the time his stomach cramped from retching, Cui Xisheng was left slumped over the sink, gasping for breath.
The IV needle had shifted due to the violent vomiting, causing blood to backflow into the tube. Annoyed, Cui Xisheng simply removed the IV. He was exhausted and just wanted to sleep—he had no time to wait for the nutrient drip to finish.
Supporting himself against the wall, he walked out of the bathroom. The noises outside seemed to have grown louder. This time, along with the howls of the sick, there were also terrified screams from seemingly normal people.
Cui Xisheng peered out through the peephole. The entire fifth floor consisted of VIP rooms, with only a few patients and minimal medical staff. The corridor outside appeared empty.
He hesitated for a moment before deciding to open the door and take a look.
As soon as the door opened, the chaotic sounds became even clearer. Room 505 was the second-to-last room at the end of the corridor. Though the hallway was empty, desperate cries erupted from Room 502 across from him.
There seemed to be a struggle happening inside. Along with the screaming and growling, there were also loud crashing noises as if objects were being thrown.
Not wanting to get involved, Cui Xisheng was about to close his door when suddenly, Room 502's door burst open.
A middle-aged woman covered in blood ran out in a panic.
Seeing Cui Xisheng, the woman’s eyes lit up with hope. She dashed toward him, spitting blood as she pleaded, "Help me! Please, help me!"
The hallway was narrow—less than three meters wide. The woman reached Cui Xisheng in just a few steps, her bloodstained hands gripping him tightly.
"Roar!"
Cui Xisheng was frozen in shock. Before he could react, another figure lunged out of Room 502.
Its face was ashen, its body decayed, and a foul stench filled the air—exactly like the infected individuals in the photos online.
The creature staggered forward unsteadily, its disjointed limbs reaching for the middle-aged woman.
"Get inside!" the woman screamed in terror, shoving Cui Xisheng hard. He stumbled backward, falling to the ground.
A sharp pain shot through his backside, making him instinctively clutch his stomach.
The woman quickly followed him into the room, slamming the door shut and locking it firmly.
Outside, the creature clawed at the door, growling wildly. Whatever it was using, it was strong enough to make the reinforced metal door creak under the pressure.
The shrill scraping sound sent stabbing pains through Cui Xisheng’s head. At the same time, a faint cramp rippled through his stomach.
Pressing a hand to his abdomen, Cui Xisheng struggled to stand up, intending to call Hao Ren.
But before he could, the woman barged past him, knocking him back to the floor.
