"I recently encountered a patient with severe anemia. Cold hands and feet, pale complexion, nausea, and vomiting. No matter what I tried, he wouldn’t recover. I’m at my wit’s end. I wonder if the Dean has any good solutions?" Meng Jiangtian said, his eyes fixed on the top of Cui Xisheng’s bowed head.
"Is your patient male or female? If it’s a woman, pregnancy could be the cause." Hao Ren smiled meaningfully.
"My patient is male, so pregnancy is out of the question. He also never had anemia before. Interestingly, his symptoms seem quite similar to those of this student. I wonder what caused Cui Xisheng’s anemia?"
Hearing his own name, Cui Xisheng lowered his head even further, almost as if he wanted to bury himself in his own chest.
"Cui Xisheng’s condition is quite complex. It’s not something that can be explained in just a few words. His anemia is actually a complication caused by another underlying condition—not just simple anemia."
"Is it serious?"
"Very serious."
"Serious enough to warrant a leave of absence?"
"If he didn’t take a leave, he might not survive."
Meng Jiangtian frowned, still looking at Cui Xisheng’s lowered head. "Cui Xisheng, will you have to stay in the hospital indefinitely?"
"His condition is rare. He’ll be taking a one-year leave of absence, and I will personally oversee his treatment. He will be staying at Huafeng University Hospital."
"It’s getting late, and I have other matters to attend to. I’ll be taking Cui Xisheng back now. If you have any further questions regarding anemia, feel free to visit me in Room 506 at Huafeng University Hospital. That’s where Cui Xisheng is staying, and I’ll be checking in on him frequently."
"I’ll be sure to visit the Dean when I need guidance."
"Cui Xisheng, let’s go." Hao Ren reached out to pull him up.
Still keeping his head down, Cui Xisheng obediently followed Hao Ren out of the director’s office. Behind him, he could feel an intense gaze boring into the back of his head, as if trying to pierce through it.
Feeling the weight of that stare, Cui Xisheng stiffly moved his legs forward. But as he stepped out of the office, his left foot accidentally caught his right, causing him to stumble.
In that moment of panic, only one thought filled his mind—I can’t let my baby get hurt!
Instinctively, he wrapped his arms protectively around his stomach, closed his eyes, and braced himself for the fall.
A strong arm grabbed him just in time, yanking him into a half-spin before he ended up on his knees instead of crashing to the ground.
Hao Ren reacted quickly, catching him before he could fall further. "Are you alright? Are you feeling dizzy again?"
"I’m fine." Cui Xisheng’s heart pounded wildly. He hurriedly touched his stomach, confirming there was no discomfort, and finally let out a sigh of relief.
He steadied himself with Hao Ren’s arm and stood up—only to lift his head and find Meng Jiangtian watching him.
This time, the distance between them was so small that Cui Xisheng could see his own reflection in Meng Jiangtian’s eyes.
Unlike the usual brown eyes of Asians, Meng Jiangtian’s were a deep, pure black—cold and unreadable. No concern, no warmth.
All this weakness—this vulnerability—was because he was carrying this man’s child. This was all his fault. And yet, to Meng Jiangtian, he had been nothing more than a casual fling.
A sudden wave of resentment surged through Cui Xisheng. He glared at Meng Jiangtian with unfiltered hatred.
Legs no longer stiff, head held high, he spun around and strode out of the room without hesitation.
Meng Jiangtian’s frown deepened. He stood at the doorway, watching Cui Xisheng and Hao Ren’s retreating figures, lost in thought.
Back in the car on the way to the hospital, Cui Xisheng’s mood was foul. In a muffled voice, he said, "I want to change rooms."
"You know Meng Jiangtian, don’t you?" Hao Ren chuckled, as if humoring a child throwing a tantrum.
"I don’t know him." Just hearing that name soured Cui Xisheng’s mood even further.
"He’s the father of your child, isn’t he?" Hao Ren’s gaze lifted slightly. In the rearview mirror, he caught a glimpse of Cui Xisheng’s shocked expression.
