AAISBMEBF Chapter 46: If Only One Can Be Saved, Who?

After more than a hundred people had eaten their fill, the sun had completely set.
As the zombie horde below grew more restless, the people on the rooftop gradually drifted off to sleep.
Cui Xisheng tucked his hands into his sleeves, hugging himself tightly.
Behind him, Meng Jiangtian radiated heat like a living furnace—his presence was impossible to ignore.
Even though Cui Xisheng didn’t want to admit it, having Meng Jiangtian there made him feel a deep sense of security.
Before he knew it, drowsiness took over, and he unknowingly fell asleep.
In the dead of night, Meng Jiangtian opened his eyes.
He stared at Cui Xisheng’s sleeping face for a moment before quietly getting up and seeking out the student council president.
"You still want to go back to that supermarket?"
Hearing Meng Jiangtian’s words, the student council president frowned.
"I need to bring back some rice and flour. These snacks aren’t enough to sustain us."
Meng Jiangtian nodded.
"We were just there, and we already caught the zombies' attention. Going back now is too dangerous. Let’s search for other supermarkets first, then return for the rice and flour when it’s safer," the student council president suggested.
"You guys go search. I’ll go back to that one alone. But you must leave someone behind to protect Cui Xisheng and Liu Anna. If I come back and find either of them hurt, I’ll settle the score with you."
The student council president suddenly asked a sharp question.
"If only one of them can be saved, who should we choose?"
He had been watching Meng Jiangtian closely.
It was clear that there was some subtle tension between Meng Jiangtian, Cui Xisheng, and Liu Anna.
The student council president was ambitious—he had plans to establish his own faction in the future.
He had considered recruiting Meng Jiangtian.
But Meng Jiangtian wasn’t someone who could be easily controlled.
If, at some point, Meng Jiangtian became an obstacle to his plans, this might be the best opportunity to eliminate him.
He had hesitated between killing Meng Jiangtian or recruiting him.
But after realizing he wasn’t strong enough to take him down, he had no choice but to attempt recruitment instead.
If he had to sacrifice either Cui Xisheng or Liu Anna, he would prioritize saving the person Meng Jiangtian cared about the most.
"Both of them must be saved."
Meng Jiangtian’s voice was calm, but his dark eyes seemed to glow with a chilling light in the darkness.
"If either of them dies, none of you will live either."
A cold sweat broke out on the student council president’s back.
The invisible pressure was suffocating.
Given Meng Jiangtian’s reputation—having already killed three students—the student council president had no doubt that if anything happened to Cui Xisheng or Liu Anna, Meng Jiangtian would slaughter all hundred people on the rooftop.
In the apocalypse, power dictated everything.
The student council president had always craved that level of dominance.
His jealousy toward Meng Jiangtian grew even stronger.
Swallowing nervously, he straightened his posture and forced his voice to remain steady as he changed the topic.
"When will you be back? If you take too long, we’ll have to go out looking for more food. What we have left will only last for one more meal."
"If I take one ability user with me, that leaves only one to guard them. Who do you want to protect them—Zhao Huanrui or Qi Tianshan?"
Meng Jiangtian thought for a moment.
"I’ll be back before tomorrow night. Let Qi Tianshan protect them."
Qi Tianshan was a fire ability user.
Low-level zombies were still afraid of fire and light, so it shouldn’t be too difficult for him to protect two people and help them escape if needed.
After another moment of thought, Meng Jiangtian locked eyes with the student council president.
"If only one can be saved—save Cui Xisheng."
As soon as he finished speaking, he disappeared into the night like the wind.
