Neither of them slept, both lost in their own thoughts.

They endured until the dead of night. Cui Xisheng's eyelids felt as heavy as lead, yet the sound of Meng Jiangtian’s breathing behind him remained steady.

After three years together, Cui Xisheng was all too familiar with the rhythm of Meng Jiangtian’s breathing when he was truly asleep.

“Go to sleep. I won’t check your pulse.”

Sensing that Cui Xisheng was still awake, Meng Jiangtian sighed and spoke softly.

Cui Xisheng already had anemia. Staying up all night would only make his condition worse.

But Cui Xisheng didn’t believe him.

Meng Jiangtian waited for a while. When he noticed that Cui Xisheng still wasn’t asleep, he reached out and gently patted his shoulder.

Whenever Cui Xisheng had trouble sleeping in the past, Meng Jiangtian would hold him like this and lightly pat his shoulder until he drifted off.

But this time, instead of making him sleepy, the familiar touch jolted Cui Xisheng awake, bringing a flood of memories rushing back.

Meng Jiangtian might have been cold and quiet, but he had always taken care of him well.

Back when they were together, Cui Xisheng had been happy.

There were so many beautiful memories. But the better they were, the more painful it had been when Meng Jiangtian cruelly ended things.

The more he thought about it, the more wronged he felt.

He held back his tears, but in the end, he couldn’t stop them.

If they were just friends with benefits, Meng Jiangtian shouldn’t have treated him so well.

He shouldn’t have given him false hope.

All those moments of kindness—when Meng Jiangtian finally broke things off so heartlessly, they turned into sharp knives, cutting deep into Cui Xisheng’s heart.

It hurt.

It hurt so much.

Cui Xisheng cried as he remembered.

He cried until he was exhausted.

Eventually, he fell asleep without even realizing it.

Meng Jiangtian hesitated for a moment but, in the end, did not take his hand to check his pulse.

Cui Xisheng slept terribly.

His dreams were chaotic and filled with all sorts of scenes—every single one of them about Meng Jiangtian.

Some were good. Some were bad.

By the time he woke up, his head was pounding from it all.

The sun was already leaning toward the west. Cui Xisheng stared at its position in the sky, feeling dazed.

Had he slept for an entire day?

"What time is it?"

Zhao Jiake was sitting nearby, whispering to a fire-type ability user beside him.

Hearing Cui Xisheng’s voice, Zhao Jiake immediately turned his head, his face lighting up with joy.

"You’re finally awake! You slept the whole day. It’s already three in the afternoon. Are you hungry?"

His expectant gaze was so bright that it made Cui Xisheng uneasy.

"You haven’t eaten?"

Zhao Jiake was practically broadcasting I want food with his expression. Cui Xisheng sat up and asked.

"Just a piece of bread this morning. Before Meng Jiangtian left, he told us we weren’t allowed to eat anything without your permission."

Right on cue, Zhao Jiake’s stomach let out a loud rumble.

"Did the ability users go out looking for food again? They’re not back yet?"

Just hearing Meng Jiangtian’s name made Cui Xisheng’s head hurt even more.

He glanced at the boxes beside him. One was full of red date-flavored snacks. With a sigh, he grabbed the whole box and handed it to Zhao Jiake.

Zhao Jiake eagerly took it, not even bothering to be picky. He immediately pulled out a red date bread and a carton of red date milk.

The fire-type ability user next to him nudged his arm. Zhao Jiake turned to Cui Xisheng and said, "This is the fire-type ability user assigned to protect you. He hasn’t eaten all day either."

He left it at that without saying more.

Cui Xisheng understood the implication. He nodded slightly.

"The whole box is yours. You two can eat as much as you want."

"Thank you."

The fire-type ability user mumbled his gratitude in a small voice, his timid demeanor completely unlike that of a powerful ability user.

Zhao Jiake had mentioned before that this guy was weak-willed and had no opinions of his own.

And judging by his behavior now, it seemed like Zhao Jiake had been right.
