AAISBMEBF Chapter 23: The Male Lead Who Doesn't Follow the Script

According to typical novel tropes, Meng Jiangtian, after hearing Liu Anna’s words, should now believe that Cui Xisheng had forced her to find food.
Then, the misunderstandings would pile up, leading to verbal abuse and drama.
As Meng Jiangtian walked over, Cui Xisheng’s mind had already played out an entire melodramatic soap opera.
But then—thud!
Meng Jiangtian tossed the cushions onto the floor, the sound snapping Cui Xisheng out of his overactive imagination.
Too scary! No way! He refused to be the tragic heroine in some angst-filled love story.
Cui Xisheng immediately looked up and blurted out, “Your girlfriend is too annoying. She kept asking questions, so I told her to go find food just to get rid of her. I didn’t actually mean it.”
For a brief moment, the air went still.
Liu Anna had never met someone this blunt before. The tears she had painstakingly squeezed out immediately vanished in her shock.
Cui Xisheng stared into Meng Jiangtian’s eyes, hoping he would believe him. But Meng Jiangtian’s face remained expressionless, his gaze unreadable.
At that moment, Cui Xisheng’s stomach growled loudly again. He rubbed his stomach and, feeling awkward under Meng Jiangtian’s stare, muttered, “I really am hungry. But I really didn’t mean for your girlfriend to go find food for me.”
He had spent so much time vomiting his guts out that he was never hungry—except now. Ever since getting pregnant, it felt like this baby was just out to make his life difficult.
Meng Jiangtian had always been stone-faced, but now he was like an actual statue. Cui Xisheng couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
When Meng Jiangtian suddenly picked him up and placed him onto a cushion, Cui Xisheng didn’t even dare to struggle.
The cushions were the ones used in gym class. Not too soft, not too hard—much more comfortable than sitting on the floor.
Then, without a word, Meng Jiangtian tossed the other cushion in front of Liu Anna.
Liu Anna quickly grabbed his arm, her voice full of grievance. “I just wanted to be friends with Cui. I didn’t expect to annoy him. When I saw he was hungry, I offered to find food for him on my own. But he yelled at me… He scared me… Jiangtian-gege, please don’t misunderstand him, okay?”
Cui Xisheng, feeling cozy on the cushion, was instantly annoyed again.
Is this the legendary “twisting the truth” skill of a white lotus?
He turned to Meng Jiangtian to see his reaction. But the guy just kept his blank face—no sign of happiness, no sign of anger.
Cui Xisheng frowned. Why isn’t this male lead following the script? What am I supposed to do now?
Meng Jiangtian stayed silent. Liu Anna, growing uneasy, clutched her cushion tightly. Then, without a word, Meng Jiangtian turned and walked away.
Liu Anna sat there, hugging the cushion. Cui Xisheng sat on his, both watching as Meng Jiangtian disappeared.
Once he was gone, Liu Anna turned to Cui Xisheng with an awkward smile. After a moment, she placed the cushion beside him, trying to cozy up to him again.
But Cui Xisheng didn’t bother hiding his irritation. “Can you stay away from me? I don’t want to tell you anything about me and Meng Jiangtian.”
Gurgle…
His stomach let out another loud growl, as if agreeing with him.
“Cui Xisheng, I really just want to be your friend. Why are you rejecting me so much?”
Liu Anna pouted as if about to cry.
Cui Xisheng wasn’t softhearted toward girls. Annoyed, he simply got up, dragged his cushion, and moved far away from her.
