Qi Sheng hadn’t expected Cui Xisheng to be this heartbroken. Scratching his head awkwardly, he patted Cui Xisheng’s shoulder.
"Alright, alright, I won’t ask anymore. Just stop crying."
Cui Xisheng put on a show of sobbing for a bit longer before Qi Sheng forcibly pulled his head out of the pillow.
"No wonder you never liked any of the girls we introduced to you. You already had a girlfriend! Why didn’t you say so earlier?"
"My girlfriend didn’t want me to tell anyone. She wanted me to focus on my studies," Cui Xisheng said, weaving his lie more tightly. "But looking back now, she probably had already moved on a long time ago. She just kept me around as a backup."
Thinking about how coldly Meng Jiangtian had thrown out the word friend with benefits, Cui Xisheng felt like even a backup would have had more dignity than him.
"Don’t feel bad. Every guy’s been a backup at least once in their youth. Breaking up with a girl like that is a blessing in disguise—better than her cheating on you after marriage. Honestly, she wasn’t worth your tears."
"I just can’t get over it."
"So, you’re crying because you’re angry, not because you’re heartbroken?"
"Maybe both."
"This is nothing. If you’re feeling down, let’s go out for dinner. Drinks are on me."
"No thanks, my stomach hurts."
"The counselor said you were in the hospital for a few days because of stomach issues. What’s wrong with your stomach, anyway?"
Qi Sheng’s words made Cui Xisheng freeze for a moment.
He had spent the past three days agonizing over the baby and hadn’t even thought about how the school would handle his absence.
Stomach pain? That must have been an excuse Dean Hao Ren came up with for him.
A lot of doctors had been in the room when he found out he was pregnant. Who knew how the dean had managed to keep them all quiet?
"It’s nothing serious. I just ate too much barbecue, ended up with food poisoning, and spent three days in the hospital," Cui Xisheng said lightly, trying to downplay it.
Qi Sheng didn’t press further and instead sat down at his desk.
"Oh, right. Do you know Meng Jiangtian?"
The moment he heard that name, Cui Xisheng instinctively shuddered and froze in place.
"Meng Jiangtian? Why are you asking about him?"
"He called me today, saying he was looking for you. I told him I wasn’t in the dorm, and he just hung up.
Meng Jiangtian—isn’t he that top student from Class Three? Do you know him? Why is he looking for you?"
"I guess I know him… but not very well. No idea why he’s looking for me. I’m tired—I think I’ll take a nap."
Feeling guilty, Cui Xisheng pulled the blanket over his head, trying to avoid further questioning.
Maybe it was the exhaustion from crying, but he actually fell asleep.
By the time he opened his eyes again, it was already evening, and his other two dormmates had returned.
As soon as Cui Xisheng woke up, he was startled by a pair of dark eyes staring at him.
He shuddered, his hair standing on end. When he recognized Bai Qianyu, he clutched his chest, feeling his racing heartbeat.
"You scared me! Why are you standing at my bedside staring at me?" he asked, exasperated.
"Cui Xisheng, you look terrible. Based on my three years of studying 望闻问切 (looking, listening, questioning, and feeling the pulse), you’re definitely sick. Open your mouth—I need to check your tongue," Bai Qianyu said seriously, already reaching out.
Cui Xisheng quickly dodged, laughing. "Forget it! With your bottom-of-the-class grades, I wouldn’t dare let you examine me."
"He might be a quack, but I’m not," Wang Zhonglin interjected. "Your face is really pale, and even your lips are turning white. Let me take your pulse."
Wang Zhonglin was a top student, and his family ran a traditional Chinese medicine clinic. By now, his skills were probably good enough to graduate.
"I just got out of the hospital, so don’t worry. It’s just gastritis. I haven’t been eating or sleeping well these past few days, so my complexion is a bit off. I’ll be fine after a few days of rest."
Cui Xisheng quickly pulled his wrist back. At seven weeks, his pulse would definitely reveal the pregnancy.
