“If Meng Jiangtian isn’t around, I can be your bodyguard. Your safety will be my responsibility—all I ask for is a little food and water.” The muscular guy looked at Cui Xisheng sincerely.
Cui Xisheng never expected this.
He had lived for 21 years, and now—somehow—he had managed to land himself a bodyguard.
Slowly stepping out from behind the water tank, Cui Xisheng tossed the bottle of mineral water to the guy. As he watched the well-defined muscles in the guy’s arms flex, he found himself quite satisfied with this so-called bodyguard.
Normally, this would be the kind of offer he’d happily accept.
But the problem was—his food and water were all given to him by Meng Jiangtian.
He thought back to that day when Meng Jiangtian coldly and decisively broke up with him, walking away without a shred of hesitation. That back view still haunted him.
Right now, Meng Jiangtian seemed to be treating him well again, but who knew if he’d change his mind one day and abandon him just as ruthlessly?
And if that happened—if he no longer had food and water to offer—what was stopping this muscular guy from turning on him instead?
“Uh… you—” Cui Xisheng hesitated as he watched the guy chug the entire bottle of water in one go.
The guy wiped his mouth and casually tossed the empty bottle over the edge of the rooftop.
Down below, the zombies erupted into frenzied howls.
“My name is Zhao Jiake.”
Cui Xisheng took a moment to process that. Then he sighed. “Zhao Jiake, I’d really like to hire you as my bodyguard, but the food I have isn’t even mine. It was given to me. I might not even have enough for myself in the future, let alone extra to pay you. I don’t have any food on hand—I can’t afford a bodyguard.”
“All of our food comes from those four espers,” Zhao Jiake replied matter-of-factly. “Meng Jiangtian takes care of you. As long as there’s food, he’ll definitely give you some.
“If the military really does come to rescue us, then until that happens, I can protect you. And if you still need me afterward, I can continue to be your bodyguard.”
Zhao Jiake seemed more confident in Meng Jiangtian than Cui Xisheng himself.
“If you think Meng Jiangtian will always have food, why don’t you go to Liu Anna? She’s his girlfriend. He’s bound to give her food.” Cui Xisheng gestured toward Liu Anna.
Liu Anna had been paying attention to their conversation all along. The moment the two of them looked her way, her previously dark expression brightened into a radiant smile.
Zhao Jiake, however, scoffed. “She calls herself his girlfriend, but I don’t think Meng Jiangtian sees her that way.
“I’ve been watching Meng Jiangtian for a while now. He treats you way better than he treats Liu Anna.”
Zhao Jiake’s tone grew increasingly suggestive. “He had four cans of Eight-Treasure Porridge, and he gave you three of them. That’s some pretty obvious favoritism.”
Then, raising an eyebrow, he shot Cui Xisheng a sly, knowing look.
Maybe he was just joking, but…
Cui Xisheng and Meng Jiangtian did have that kind of past relationship.
And now, here was Zhao Jiake, claiming to have been watching Meng Jiangtian for a while.
Cui Xisheng immediately became wary.
Was this guy also into men? Had he been secretly eyeing Meng Jiangtian for a long time? Had he already figured out their past relationship?
Cui Xisheng stared at Zhao Jiake with suspicion.
Zhao Jiake noticed the intensity of the gaze and stiffened.
“Whoa, whoa, don’t misunderstand me!” He hurriedly explained, “I didn’t know Meng Jiangtian before. I’ve been observing all four espers because I was looking for someone worth following.
“I’ve got strength and muscles, but without an esper ability, I can’t fight zombies. So I figured I’d find an esper to follow—someone who could be my ‘boss.’ Once my boss gains power and influence, as one of the first people to follow him, I’d benefit too.
“And I’m good at reading people. Meng Jiangtian may seem cold, but out of all the espers here, he’s the only one with real leadership qualities.”
