Luckily, the rooftop had chest-high walls with iron railings. Otherwise, in the frenzy, a few people would have surely been pushed off.

And below them—nothing but zombies.

Right now, the people’s eyes held only one thing: that can of Eight-Treasure Porridge. In the chaos of the chase, the can somehow ended up heading back toward Cui Xisheng.

Seeing the charging crowd, Cui Xisheng scrambled away from his mat, crawling to hide behind the water tank, finally feeling a bit safer.

Downstairs, the zombies suddenly became agitated. Their eerie wails matched the shouts of the people above. They had heard the noise from the rooftop and started gathering.

Cui Xisheng peeked over and saw a mass of rotting, grotesque faces craning upward, completely surrounding the first floor.

Thankfully, the apocalypse had only just begun, and these zombies weren’t very intelligent yet. The first-floor door swung inward to close, and for now, they didn’t know how to open it.

Even though the zombies couldn’t get up, the people on the rooftop had already begun fighting over the porridge.

At a time like this, gender didn’t matter.

The girls were the first to be punched and kicked out of the struggle.

Then, the smaller boys were kicked out.

Next, the weaker ones were eliminated.

In the end, only a few burly men remained, locked in a brutal battle.

Finally, the can landed in the hands of a muscular guy—though he was covered in bruises and scratches.

But it was worth it. The joy of victory made the pain irrelevant. A can of Eight-Treasure Porridge was a worthy prize.

Being tall and strong, the guy finished it in just a few gulps. Someone who never even bothered licking yogurt lids before was now using his thick tongue to scrape the last bits of porridge from the can.

He licked it cleaner than if it had been washed.

Only after making sure not a single drop remained did he reluctantly toss the empty can aside.

But the porridge had been a little too sweet and sticky. After a whole day without water, he felt parched.

Turning his head, his eyes locked onto Cui Xisheng.

Cui Xisheng was still holding a bottle of mineral water, having not yet had the chance to give it away.

The guy hesitated, clearly aware of Meng Jiangtian’s status as an esper, but after a moment, he stood up and walked toward Cui Xisheng.

Not knowing what the guy wanted, Cui Xisheng panicked. Seeing him approach with a determined look, he quickly ducked completely behind the water tank, mind racing for an escape plan.

As the muscular guy passed Liu Anna, she could no longer hide her excitement.

Her little fists clenched tight.

She secretly cheered him on.

Just one punch. Given how frail Cui Xisheng is, he’ll probably meet the afterlife in an instant.

But—

“I mean no harm,” the muscular guy suddenly said.

Liu Anna’s hopeful expression shattered.

Instead of attacking, the guy stopped on the other side of the water tank, his voice deep and calm.

His tone was so mild that Cui Xisheng hesitantly peeked out, sizing him up.

Not seeing any malice in his eyes, Cui Xisheng cautiously asked, “What do you want?”

“I want some water,” the guy stated plainly.

Worried about a misunderstanding, he quickly added, “I don’t intend to steal from you. Besides, I can’t beat that esper beside you—Meng Jiangtian, right?

“But you’re just an ordinary person. And there will be times when he’s not around, like now.

“Today, people have only been hungry for a single day, so they’re not desperate yet. But as food and water become scarcer, when hunger drives them mad, if Meng Jiangtian isn’t here, someone will come for your supplies.

“You’ll be in danger then.

“I study traditional Chinese medicine, but I love fitness even more. I can’t take on espers, but against the regular people here? That’s a different story.”
