The middle-aged woman ran to the window, hiding behind the hospital bed, staring in terror at the door.

She completely ignored Cui Xisheng and showed no intention of apologizing for knocking him over.

Cui Xisheng was annoyed, but his entire body felt terrible, and he had no energy to argue with her. Supporting himself with his hands, he slowly got up. His stomach had taken another hit from the fall, making the pain even worse.

Holding onto the wall, he walked back to his bed, picked up the phone from the bedside table, and called Hao Ren.

Hao Ren seemed busy and didn't answer. After a minute, the call automatically disconnected.

Frowning, Cui Xisheng felt his stomach cramping. He thought for a moment and dialed again.

Still no answer. Unwilling to give up, he kept calling, completely unaware of the strange changes happening behind the hospital bed.

The middle-aged woman, who had been crying moments ago, suddenly started convulsing. Blood foamed from her mouth, mixed with bits of internal organs.

Her eyes rolled back, her pupils losing color and turning grayish-white. The flush of fear on her face quickly faded, her skin turning a pale bluish-white.

She collapsed to the ground, twitching for a moment before going still.

Cui Xisheng had called four or five times, but Hao Ren's phone remained unanswered.

Frowning, he put his phone down and placed a hand on his stomach, trying to calm the baby inside. When he turned around, he realized the woman was no longer behind the bed. Stepping around, he saw her lying motionless on the floor.

"Hey, are you okay? Wake up! Wake up!"

Cui Xisheng nudged the woman, but she didn’t respond.

He reached out to check her breathing—nothing.

He pressed a finger to her neck—no pulse.

Grabbing her wrist, he checked again—still nothing.

Cui Xisheng stared at the woman in shock. Just a few minutes ago, she had been flushed with color, pushing him with surprising strength. Even though she had been covered in blood, she hadn’t seemed like she was on the verge of death.

But in the time it took him to make a few calls—less than ten minutes—she was dead?

Had she suffered a major arterial rupture? But the blood around her was minimal—nothing like an arterial bleed.

Outside, the scratching at the door abruptly stopped. The creature outside, unable to break through the iron door, let out a few frustrated howls before wandering off.

With that grating noise gone, Cui Xisheng finally felt a bit of relief.

Noticing a pair of white gloves Hao Ren had left on the table, he put them on and started examining the woman. A sudden death in his hospital room—he needed to figure out the cause to avoid any suspicion falling on him.

Aside from what looked like a bite wound on her arm, she had no other visible injuries.

But as Cui Xisheng watched in horror, the wound on her arm began to rot rapidly, emitting the same putrid stench as the creature outside.

His stomach lurched. Turning away, he gagged violently, but having already vomited earlier, only a bit of stomach acid came up.

Just as he was about to become dizzy from retching, something gripped his arm tightly.

Cui Xisheng froze in shock, the sudden pain snapping him back to full awareness.

He turned his head—and his heart nearly stopped.

The middle-aged woman, who should have been dead, suddenly came back to life.

Her grayish-white eyes locked onto him. Her mouth opened wide, revealing a gaping maw filled with rotting teeth and a foul stench.

With a sudden lunge, she pounced at him.

There was no time to react. Instinctively, Cui Xisheng wrapped his arms around his stomach, tucked his head, and squeezed his eyes shut.
