Yu Zhengdu was stunned by the words from the other end of the phone. He froze for a long moment before snapping back to reality and saying, “Sorry, I didn’t catch that. Could you please repeat it?”
The elderly man repeated his statement and solemnly emphasized, “Comrade, I have never done anything heinous in my entire life. Even if I can’t be reborn as a human, at the very least, I should become an ox or a horse. How could I possibly be reincarnated as a pig?”
Yu Zhengdu: "……"
Yu Zhengdu thought for about half a minute before seriously responding, "Sir, this is an office phone. Please do not use it for pranks."
After saying that, he directly hung up the phone, thinking to himself, Have square dancing and free egg giveaways already stopped satisfying the elderly these days?
Sighing about the decline of social morals, Yu Zhengdu went downstairs to have lunch.
When the lunch break ended, his new colleagues silently reappeared in the office.
Yu Zhengdu didn’t give much thought to the prank call he received at noon. He searched online for a few resignation letter templates, planning to piece them together and submit them to Lu Lingxi before the end of the workday.
As he wrote his resignation letter, he also browsed WeChat messages. Apparently, something new was happening, as his class group chat was unusually active.
Anti-Baldness Alliance:
[Zhang Qingqing: Guys, I got an offer from NiuTech, doing testing!]
[Classmate A: Wow, congrats!]
[Classmate B: Those of us still unemployed are crying our eyes out.]
[Classmate C: Crying +1. Totally envious of Qingqing.]
[Zhang Qingqing: Nothing to be jealous about. If anything, you should envy Zhengdu—he got an offer from NovaTech early on, and that’s a real tech giant.]
[Zhu Yan: (:з」∠) So true. Also, wasn’t Zhengdu the only one from our major who got an offer from NovaTech this year?]
[Classmate A: Seems like it.]
[Hou Guangzong: Haha, not really. I also got an offer from NovaTech and reported for work a few days ago, but I haven't seen Zhengdu there.]
[Classmate B: Whoa, Guangzong got into NovaTech too? That’s impressive!]
[Hou Guangzong: It was just luck.]
[Zhang Qingqing: Never heard about this before. So low-key!]
[Zhu Yan: Wait, so what happened with Zhengdu? I clearly remember he got the offer last year—I even saw his offer email.]
[Classmate A: @Yu Zhengdu, summon the top student!]
Yu Zhengdu, who had just finished writing his resignation letter, looked up to see himself tagged over ten times. He quickly skimmed through the chat, and upon seeing Hou Guangzong’s "Haha, not really," he found it amusing but didn’t bother explaining.
[Yu Zhengdu: Yeah, I’m not going to the tech giant anymore. Switched to another company.]
The group chat erupted in shock, with classmates bombarding him with questions about why he left and which company he joined.
Yu Zhengdu ignored the first set of questions and was about to say that he was planning to resign from his current company as well when, at that moment, an elderly man with graying hair rushed into the office. He anxiously glanced around before hesitantly asking, "Excuse me, is this Luofeng Management Company?"
This tiny company didn’t even have a receptionist. Since Yu Zhengdu’s seat was near the entrance, he leaned out slightly and replied, "Yes, how can I help you?"
"Finally found the place!" The elderly man was practically in tears of relief as he hurried forward and shoved a phone screen in Yu Zhengdu’s face. "Sir, my name is Chen Kang. I received a message from you this morning…"
Yu Zhengdu was momentarily stunned. He instinctively glanced at the old man’s phone, only to see a large-font text message on the screen:
[Dear Customer, your reincarnation schedule has been arranged. Please report to the Fucheng Ancient Well Reincarnation Point on the morning of March 20, 2018, to queue for reincarnation. Your queue number is 1022. Based on your accumulated karma from your past life, you will be reborn as a breeding pig at a livestock farm in your next life. Please cherish your remaining time. If you have any questions, please call: 000-xxxxxxx for consultation. Luofeng Life Management Consulting Co., Ltd.]
Yu Zhengdu: "……"
Yu Zhengdu: "?????"
Yu Zhengdu: "!!!!!"
He reread the message twice in disbelief before finally processing the fact that the old man’s phone call earlier wasn’t a prank.
What did this mean?
It meant that the Luofeng Life Management Company he had joined was a scam company—the kind that even targeted the elderly.
And their scamming techniques were absurdly crude—tricking an old man into believing he was going to be reincarnated as a pig?!
Yu Zhengdu was amazed by the sheer creativity of the scam but quickly pulled the old man toward the door while lowering his voice. "Sir, this is a scam message. Don’t believe it. Just go home."
But the old man wouldn’t listen. "No, I need to get this clarified. I’m supposed to be reincarnated tomorrow—this isn’t something to joke about!"
Yu Zhengdu sighed. He had seen many cases like this in the news—elderly people who, due to lack of judgment and fear of death, became utterly convinced by scammers. Some even followed instructions without question.
This was a real-life example right in front of him. Yu Zhengdu was about to pull Chen Kang outside to talk, but before he could, someone from the consulting department noticed the commotion and stood up. "What’s going on?"
Yu Zhengdu immediately shielded Chen Kang behind him. "Nothing—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Chen Kang eagerly called out, "Sir, there’s a problem with my reincarnation information—"
This guy just wouldn’t stop… Yu Zhengdu sighed. Now he had no choice but to face this fraudulent company head-on. He was about to righteously condemn his coworker when suddenly, a chill ran down his spine. The next second, his vision blurred, and before he knew it, Chen Kang had run right through his body—leaving behind a faint, semi-transparent afterimage.
Yu Zhengdu: "……??"
He stood there, dumbfounded, as he realized what had just happened.
Chen Kang had passed through his body like a ghost.
Still in shock, Yu Zhengdu watched as Chen Kang ran up to the consulting department. "Sir, here’s the message I received—"
The consulting employee greeted him warmly. "Please present your identification."
Chen Kang handed over his ID, and after checking it against the system, the employee said apologetically, "Our calculations on the Book of Life and Death had an error, misjudging your karma value. Based on your past-life merits, you are actually supposed to be reborn as a human, and into a very well-off family at that."
Chen Kang was overjoyed upon hearing this and exclaimed excitedly, "Really?"
The colleague nodded. "Really, really. I just corrected the result, and I'll resend the message to you in a moment. Please go back and prepare for reincarnation with peace of mind."
Chen Kang thanked him profusely, and after a brief exchange of pleasantries, the colleague, perhaps feeling a bit guilty, insisted on seeing him out of the company.
However, the two of them simply walked straight through the company door and left.
Yu Zhengdu, still in a dazed state, witnessed the entire process. When he saw the colleague and Chen Kang walk through the wall and disappear, he finally found his voice and turned to his other colleagues. "Did any of you see something strange, or am I just hallucinating?"
The other colleagues looked up, exchanged glances, then shook their heads. "Nope, everything seems normal."
Yu Zhengdu: "..."
Perhaps the noise outside had drawn his attention, as the handsome young boss, Shang Que, stepped out of his office and glanced around. "What’s going on?"
Yu Zhengdu turned to him. Maybe the shock had been too great, because he responded with an unusual calmness. "Boss, I think I just saw a ghost."
Just as he finished speaking, the colleague who had escorted Chen Kang out returned—naturally, walking straight through the door again.
Yu Zhengdu’s expression remained blank. He still had the energy to tug at Shang Que’s sleeve. "Boss, did you see that?"
Shang Que’s face darkened, and he scolded the colleague unhappily, "Kang Jin, how many times have I told you? When working in a human office building, act like a human! Stop bringing your ghostly habits here!"
Caught red-handed by the boss, Kang Jin was so scared he nearly threw himself at Shang Que’s legs, crying out in terror, "Aaaah, boss, I didn’t mean to! I just forgot for a moment! Please don’t eat me!"
Yu Zhengdu: "..."
Kang Jin’s entire ghostly form blurred in fear. After confirming that the boss wouldn’t eat him, he finally sighed in relief and scurried back to his workstation, neck hunched.
Shang Que let out a displeased humph and turned to Yu Zhengdu, asking with the concern of a capitalist, "Feeling a little overwhelmed?"
Yu Zhengdu forced a stiff but polite smile. Boss, calling this just "a little" overwhelming is quite an understatement, isn’t it?
Shang Que remained completely unapologetic as he explained, "Originally, I was planning to let you settle into the work environment before telling you the truth..."
Looking at Shang Que’s inhumanly beautiful face, Yu Zhengdu was struck by an overwhelming sense of absurdity.
He felt like he should be scared, but for some reason, he still had the presence of mind to negotiate. He asked, "Boss, can I resign?"
Shang Que silently gazed at him for a moment before replying slowly, "Normally, yes. We are a very humane company..."
Listening to what seemed to be a ghostly capitalist talking about "humaneness," Yu Zhengdu felt an even stronger sense of absurdity.
Shang Que lightly rubbed his thumbs together and continued, "But you’ve already signed an employment contract. Before it expires, it’s best if you don’t resign..."
Yu Zhengdu was puzzled but still struggled to assert his rights. "According to labor laws, even with a contract, an employee can resign at any time..."
His voice lacked confidence. It felt bizarre to be discussing labor laws with ghosts.
Shang Que spread his hands. "There’s no problem according to human laws. But you signed a contract with the underworld. In other words, you’ve essentially made a pact with ghosts. If you terminate it early, you may suffer backlash."
Yu Zhengdu gathered his courage and accused, "You guys did this on purpose! Shouldn’t you have informed me of this before I signed the contract?"
Shang Que blinked. "Weren’t you the one in a hurry to get on social security?"
Yu Zhengdu: "..."
He couldn’t hold it in anymore and blurted out, "How can a company like yours even provide social security?"
Some sensitive words were omitted by the ellipsis.
Shang Que nodded matter-of-factly and replied seriously, "We’re a legitimate company, properly registered with the business bureau."
Yu Zhengdu nearly choked.
Socialism is truly incredible—even ghosts are this hardcore.
