MFSOWAA Chapter 8: Listen to My Explanation

Faced with such a serious request, Xia Lin thought he should act like a drama protagonist—turn around and run, then get caught, struggle while shouting "I won't listen, I won't listen," and finally, after a passionate kiss, confess his feelings and clear up all misunderstandings.
Ha. With his head muddled, Xia Lin filtered through the dramas he had recently watched and felt that reality was always more absurd than fiction. At the very least, no screenwriter could come up with a script where a beta solved an alpha's singlehood problem.
"There’s nothing to explain." Xia Lin found it meaningless. So, the belief that he was the protagonist of his own life for the past twenty-something years had been nothing but an illusion. "A one-in-twenty-three chance is quite high. Good luck."
Right now, he just wanted to leave this place and go back to his bed for a good sleep. God knows why he had the sudden impulse to bring Zhang Tianke to this wedding banquet, or why he ended up here, listening to an alpha seriously discussing the search for a compatible omega.
The love Xia Lin once firmly believed in crumbled in the face of biological instincts. The thing he found most unbearable was encountering someone like Kane.
Ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends from student days were nothing more than accidents.
But Kane was different.
He wore a mask of kindness and innocence while doing the cruelest things.
Everyone was congratulating the newlyweds, saying how perfectly matched they were, yet no one cared about the feelings of a beta who had been abandoned.
For the first time, Xia Lin coldly muttered, "You alphas are truly disgusting, resorting to any means necessary."
Xue Zenan did something that shocked him.
He dropped to one knee, looking up at Xia Lin, whose face was twisted in grief and anger—yet also filled with surprise. Xue Zenan took in every detail.
He said, "Maybe alphas are, but I'm not."
"Xia Lin, have you forgotten? We've met before."
This height difference allowed Xue Zenan’s alpha aura to be subdued. Even a weak beta like Xia Lin wouldn’t feel threatened.
Alphas never lowered themselves like this. They were naturally arrogant, always at the top, commanding the world with their overwhelming presence.
Xia Lin was so shocked that he took a step back, but Xue Zenan reached out and held him in place.
"Xia Lin." He called Xia Lin’s name persistently, as if trying to awaken past memories. "Don’t you remember me?"
No, Xia Lin didn’t remember ever knowing an alpha like this. Those proud and indifferent beings only ever issued commands from their high horses before turning around to dote on and pamper their omegas.
"I love you so much." Xue Zenan’s eyes locked onto Xia Lin’s, his voice impossibly gentle despite the lack of response. "If I did anything wrong, it was only that I came too late."
Xia Lin was nearly swayed by these deep, emotional words. It felt as if he had been cast in some idol drama where an alpha and a beta fall in love—except the script was so cliché, filled with tropes like love at first sight, unforgettable encounters, and, of course, amnesia and disguises.
Immediately, he recalled his perfectly uninterrupted twenty-something years of memory. He could even clearly remember his first relationship with an alpha in college. Other than that, he had lived a completely normal, mundane life—diligently attending school, going to work, and never once encountering an alpha like Xue Zenan.
The probability of being secretly loved by an alpha for years and then receiving a heartfelt confession was probably as high as his bad luck—where every single one of his exes had cheated on him and ended up happily ever after with an omega.
Xia Lin was convinced this had to be some kind of capitalist conspiracy, so he snapped out of it and firmly said, "Sorry, Xue, but I really don’t know you!"
"We met after a rainy afternoon."
Xia Lin: No recollection.
"You even bought me a five-yuan ice cream."
Xia Lin: Ha. Impossible.
"You told me that life is short, and if you meet someone you like, you should go after them bravely."
Xia Lin: If it were me, I’d have just told you to enjoy life and stop overthinking.
Listening to this nostalgic retelling, the small stir of emotion in Xia Lin's heart slowly faded away. Indeed, expecting himself to be the protagonist of a drama was just a delusion.
His tone was calm but resolute as he replied, "Xue, no matter how much detail you give, I still have no memory of this. Besides, I don’t even like ice cream, so why would I have bought you one?"
Even though Xue Zenan sounded completely convinced, Xia Lin wasn’t foolish enough to admit to things that had never happened.
"Sorry, but you’ve got the wrong person."
