MFSOWAA Chapter 7: One in Ten Thousand

When Xue Zenan carried Xia Lin away, many people saw it. The entire venue buzzed with whispers, but he couldn't care less.
His heart was filled with anger—at Xia Lin, at himself.
A sweet-talking playboy Beta and an Alpha who was insincere for the sake of an Omega—Xia Lin’s love life was a complete disaster. And then there were the rumored underclassmen, each one making Xue Zenan grit his teeth in frustration.
He felt his fury rising beyond control, but looking at Xia Lin, sleeping soundly and utterly oblivious, he found he couldn’t stay angry.
Irritated, he loosened his tie and raked a hand through his hair. Some things, when dragged on for too long, only get worse.
"Why are you so stupid?" Xue Zenan murmured, staring at the peacefully sleeping Xia Lin. "Being fooled once wasn’t enough? Why do you always fall for it?"
Xia Lin, meanwhile, was having the best sleep he'd had since endless overtime turned his life into a waking nightmare.
In his dream, he could freely curse the heartless, exploitative capitalists, quit his job without a second thought, and enjoy a beautiful night with someone he loved.
When he woke up, he stared at the ceiling, still reluctant to let go of the dream’s lingering warmth.
Short, soft hair, a gentle voice, a mild temper, small and endearing—his dream companion oddly resembled a certain junior he once dated.
Why would I think of him? Xia Lin wondered. Is reality so terrible that I’ve started reminiscing about the past?
Still drowsy, he reached out for his phone, wanting to vent in his group chat with like-minded Betas, only to grab nothing but air.
Wait—where’s my phone? And more importantly—where am I?!
Xia Lin shot up, realizing the understated décor was nothing like his room, nor did it match the flamboyant style of his friend Zhang Tianke. Alarm bells rang in his head as he cautiously climbed out of bed.
Countless dramatic scenarios flashed through his mind, all leading to one inevitable conclusion as soon as his feet hit the floor—
His pants were still on.
So… nothing happened?
He wasn’t sure if he felt relieved or disappointed. Sliding into a pair of slippers, he decided to find out whose home this was.
Just as he opened the door, he heard a muffled voice coming from the balcony.
It was a familiar voice, light and casual. Xue Zenan.
"...Finding a compatible Omega really isn’t hard."
"Do you know the probability of an Alpha meeting an Omega with a 60% or higher compatibility? One in ten thousand." Xue Zenan leaned against the balcony railing, gazing at the distant lake. His father had always been stubborn and overbearing, preaching endlessly about the so-called sacred and noble bond between Alphas and Omegas.
Ironically, all those years of brainwashing had only nurtured a deep-seated aversion in Xue Zenan toward Omegas.
Today, he was about to make a crucial decision, so he indulged his father with one last attempt at reasoning.
"In your eyes, a one-in-ten-thousand chance is an insurmountable obstacle," he continued. "But what about the probability of finding your one true love? Do you think that's any easier? One in ten thousand means that out of ten thousand Omegas, there will always be one who’s ‘compatible’ with you, regardless of their gender, looks, or personality. Doesn't that sound simple and easy? Ten thousand is too many? Come on, Mr. Xue. As of last month, there were 230,000 unmarried, eligible Omegas nationwide. That means there are exactly 23 Omegas out there who can be considered ‘compatible’ with me."
Xue Zenan spoke with conviction as he debated with the man on the other end of the call.
"If every Alpha spends their life chasing after ‘their’ Omega, society is no better than a primitive mating ground, where everything revolves around reproduction. If humanity has evolved this far only to live for the sake of procreation, don't you think that’s pathetic? Don’t break things! Stop breaking things! I appreciate that you and Father gave me life, but can you give me a little freedom? Because no matter how many Omegas exist in this world, I will only—"
He turned around—
And saw Xia Lin standing there, looking at him as if he had just unraveled the secrets of the universe.
Xue Zenan had just been passionately dissecting the statistical probability of Omega compatibility.
For a moment, he panicked, but he quickly hung up the phone and masked his turmoil with an air of calm.
With impeccable composure, he said, "Xia Lin, I can explain."
