It didn’t even take a week before the airborne replacement for Kain’s executive director position arrived. When Xia Lin saw that tall figure appear in the spacious director’s office, he almost shed tears of relief.

Xia Lin had prepared all the necessary reports and knocked on the door like a seasoned professional, his heart cheering: Thank the heavens, the headquarters finally sent someone over. I was about to work myself into a mental breakdown!

Once again, he mentally gave Kain a bad review—because a boss who abandons his work for a heat cycle is no good boss!

The newcomer was Xue Zenan, an Alpha, a high-achiever from an elite international academy, air-dropped into the branch office as an executive director. To the employees, he was just here to gain some experience before heading back to claim his destined position at the top.

Xia Lin simply thought: Having a capable boss is way better than having a useless one. So what if he’s an Alpha? As long as he works hard, both heat-driven beasts and humans are the same! He swears he’s absolutely not bitter or envious!

“Here is this week's work schedule, Director Xue. If you have any concerns, I can adjust it accordingly.”

Xue Zenan’s deep, piercing eyes remained fixed on Xia Lin as he asked, “I heard all your exes were Alphas?”

That one sentence yanked Xia Lin straight back to three years ago, when Kain had asked him, “I heard your ex-boyfriend was an Alpha?”

Back then, Xia Lin had still been a naive newbie, deeply wary of Alphas but completely unaware of any imminent danger. He had casually replied, “How do you know?”

“Because he just happens to be my friend,” Kain had said. From then on, he’d used the excuse of “a friend’s friend is also a friend” to keep inviting Xia Lin out. And well… the rest was history.

Memory lane over, Xia Lin smiled and replied, “Are you friends with Director Kain?”

“So your ex’s name is Kain? Any others?”

Xia Lin: What the hell kind of question is this?!

“Director, this is work time. Isn’t discussing personal matters a bit inappropriate?”

Xue Zenan nodded. “So, all your exes really were Alphas.”

Director, do you realize how dangerous your thoughts are right now?! I swear I don’t have the power to make single Alphas encounter their destined Omega and go into heat!

Maintaining his composed expression, Xia Lin continued his work report. Internally, he slapped a warning label on Xue Zenan: This is just another dumb Alpha who believes in workplace gossip. RED ALERT—stay away to avoid catching his delusions!

Damn it, my new boss is an idiot!

Ever since discovering that his new boss was—no, not an idiot—just an Alpha who believed in silly rumors, Xia Lin’s vigilance had been on high alert.

Yet, another week passed, and aside from normal work interactions, Xue Zenan hadn’t shown any special interest in him.

Xia Lin thought back to how Kain had blatantly and subtly pursued him in every possible way. Then he compared that to Xue Zenan’s serious, stiff, and strictly professional attitude. The contrast was just… too weird.

   [The Whole World is My Background Prop: I bet he’s just brewing up an even bigger storm. You don’t understand the irresistible pull that Omegas have on Alphas—it’s enough to turn an atheist into a devout believer. Let alone something as minor as dating a Beta. Watch out, hahaha.]

Xia Lin probably understood this so-called mysterious attraction between Alphas and Omegas better than anyone.

For example, his ex-girlfriend. She had showered him with affection, cooked him heart-shaped meals, and even prepared an array of unspeakable tools to forcibly mark him. Yet, the moment she encountered her fated Omega in heat, she abandoned Xia Lin for true love.

Or his ex-boyfriend. A poetic genius with an ethereal presence, who could pen love poems that sent shivers down the spine. He swore unwavering devotion to Xia Lin—until, of course, an Omega appeared and stole his heart effortlessly.

Or Kain…

Ring! The intercom buzzed.

“Xia Lin, come in for a moment,” Director Xue’s voice instructed.

“We’re heading to the X City branch for a business trip tomorrow. Prepare all the necessary materials. There will be a company-wide discussion meeting,” Xue Zenan said. Then, he added, “Do you have any plans for tomorrow night?”

Here it comes! Xia Lin had been on high alert for days, anticipating this moment. He calmly replied, “Yes, I have plans. My Beta boyfriend and I are having dinner and watching a movie.” He emphasized Beta extra clearly.

Xue Zenan: “Then I guess your boyfriend will have to be disappointed.”

Xia Lin: ???

Xue Zenan: “Because we’re departing at night.”

Xia Lin: …
