I knelt on the ground and explained my purpose to the Immortal Lord Zezhou.
The Immortal Lord Zezhou refused to let me leave, claiming that I was his Dao companion.
I had indeed carelessly said similar things in the past, but now, the one I desired was Xie Lin.
Seeing my determination to leave, the Immortal Lord Zezhou took me to a secret chamber in the backyard of the bamboo house. There, inside an ice coffin, lay a youth as beautiful as jade, bearing a five-part resemblance to me.
The Immortal Lord Zezhou had gone mad—he actually claimed that the youth was me.
I felt a chill of fear and turned to leave.
But the Immortal Lord Zezhou pressed me against the ice coffin, gripping my face and forcing me to look at the youth inside.
He said, "Once he wakes up, I'll let you go."
I was trapped in the bamboo house, and Su Zezhou fed me pills every day, increasing the dosage several times over.
I remembered what Xie Lin had said—the pills were poisonous and should not be taken in excess.
So it wasn't Lu Yan and the others tampering with the medicine—it was Su Zezhou who wanted me dead.
To think I had once admired him so much. That noble and righteous facade, that desire to uphold justice—nothing but lies.
Su Zezhou must have lost his mind. He muttered endlessly to me, calling me his little flower demon.
I knew he was referring to the youth in the ice coffin. But aside from our similar appearance, I had nothing in common with that person.
I was no demon. I was a merman.
After ten days of consuming the pills, I suddenly felt an unbearable headache that evening. Blood gushed from my mouth uncontrollably.
As I was on the verge of losing consciousness, I saw Su Zezhou push the door open and step inside.
He held a Soul-Extracting Needle in his hand and walked toward me, step by step.
I staggered to my feet, bracing against the wall, biting my tongue fiercely to stay awake.
Su Zezhou frowned and used his immortal arts to trap me. He said, "You truly are not him, but you carry half of his divine soul. I must reclaim it for him."
Nonsense. I had no connection to that flower demon—where would this supposed half of a divine soul come from?
Blood choked my throat as I coughed violently, my strength failing as I collapsed to the ground. The Soul-Extracting Needle was mere inches away.
Gritting my teeth, I thought, I cannot die.
He has his little flower demon, and I have my Xie Lin.
Back on the island, besides training my body, Xie Lin also taught me some defensive techniques.
I used every single one of them.
Useless. In front of Su Zezhou, they were mere child's play.
It felt like that day all over again—every meridian in my body shattering, the pain even worse than before. I curled up, unable to keep my eyes open.
As I hovered on the edge of death, I saw Xie Lin.
Perhaps it was an illusion. They say that when a person is about to die, they see the one they long for the most.
The only one I longed for was Xie Lin, so he appeared.
Somehow, despite the excruciating pain, I found myself able to smile. Gazing at Xie Lin's blurred figure, I whispered, "It hurts so much."
I didn’t die.
I was back in the Demon Realm, lying in Xie Lin’s bedchamber. A familiar place, a familiar scent.
Xie Lin sat at the bedside, glaring at me coldly before scolding me, "Idiot!"
Tears welled up in my eyes as I threw my arms around his waist. "I missed you so much."
Xie Lin hesitated for a moment before wrapping his arms around me in return, his tone still harsh. "Why are you crying? I gave you a jade token to contact me, but you never used it."
I buried my face in his chest, sobbing. "I broke it on my way back."
Xie Lin gripped my chin and forced me to look up, roughly wiping away my tears. His voice was sharp. "You were the one who insisted on returning. What could I do? If I took you back by force, you'd still be thinking about that hypocrite."
"This prince is busy—I can't watch over you every day. It wasn't my intention to let you be bullied."
A belated realization struck me, and I asked, "Did you come to Cuiwei Peak to see me?"
Xie Lin replied, "No!"
I clutched his sleeve and murmured, "My head hurts so much… Am I dying? I don’t want to die yet—I haven’t even become your Dao companion."
