AD Chapter 41
After that, Gu Lingfeng saw Chu Zichen a few more times. But as work got busier and Chu Zichen had to start filming for the variety show arranged for him—plus rehearsals for new songs and prep for his upcoming concert—Gu Lingfeng's visits gradually became less frequent.
As a competent personal assistant, Su Ning not only knew his employer’s schedule inside and out, but also kept track of the lover's affairs with equal precision. Only by doing so could he make sure that when the boss wanted to relax, everything could be properly arranged—nothing clashing, nothing delayed.
The variety show Gu Lingfeng arranged for Chu Zichen was an outdoor reality program, with each episode requiring three days of filming, and the contract was signed for four episodes. The show itself was quite popular, and with Chu Zichen’s rising fame and strong fan following, his participation was a win-win. It would elevate both his career and bring significant attention to the show.
Oh, and the show just happened to be produced by a subsidiary of Huayu Entertainment—Gu Lingfeng’s company.
Su Ning had watched one episode and thought it wasn’t bad. The fact that Gu Lingfeng secured such a prime spot for Chu Zichen clearly showed he was trying to promote him. Of course, it was also because Chu Zichen was currently trending; it was a mutually beneficial arrangement.
Though generous with his lovers, Gu Lingfeng was never the kind of man to throw away an empire for a beauty. He was a businessman first, a sugar daddy second.
After four years by his side, Su Ning understood that all too well.
When the new episode of the variety show aired, Su Ning curled up on the sofa with a pile of snacks, ready to unwind.
But not long into the show, the doorbell rang. Su Ning frowned—who could it be at this hour? Gu Lingfeng hadn’t asked him to come in today, and even if it was Gu Lingfeng, he had fingerprint access and would never use the doorbell.
Curious, Su Ning went to answer the door, only to see a fully disguised Chu Zichen standing there.
“Mr. Chu—”
Before Su Ning could finish, Chu Zichen shoved him aside and walked straight in.
Trailing behind, Su Ning calmly finished his sentence, “—President Gu went to work and hasn’t returned yet.”
Chu Zichen made himself completely at home, kicking back on the sofa with his legs crossed. “No problem. I’ll wait for him.”
When he noticed the TV playing the variety show—with his face just appearing on-screen—he smirked in satisfaction and shot Su Ning a pointed glance.
“Shooting this show was so exhausting, you have no idea. But what can I do? Lingfeng arranged it just for me, so of course I have to work hard. Otherwise, how could I face him?”
He spoke while massaging his waist, acting as if he were about to collapse from fatigue. “Unlike some people who just sit at home all day. Calls themselves a personal assistant, but really? More like a glorified maid. Yet still dreaming of becoming a phoenix, totally delusional about their place.”
Su Ning rolled his eyes internally but didn’t rise to the bait. He poured Chu Zichen a glass of water, then returned to his spot on the sofa, hugging a cushion and munching snacks while watching the show.
Honestly, it was kind of funny—watching the real person and their edited TV persona at the same time. He chuckled to himself, which only enraged Chu Zichen even more.
“Su Ning, how dare you be so disrespectful to me!” Chu Zichen suddenly jumped up, pointing at Su Ning and shouting angrily.
Su Ning looked at him innocently. “Mr. Chu, I didn’t mean any disrespect. I’m watching both versions of you—real and on TV—quite attentively.”
Chu Zichen fumed, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He’d come to see Gu Lingfeng and take Su Ning down a peg, but instead, he ended up getting riled up himself.
His eyes darted around until they landed on the glass of water on the table. Pointing at it, he snapped, “Is this how you treat guests? You know I hate plain water, and you still gave me a glass. Are you trying to drive me away?”
Su Ning resisted the urge to roll his eyes in his face.
Seriously? How childish can you get?
Too lazy to argue, Su Ning silently took the water away and replaced it with coffee. But Chu Zichen was still dissatisfied. The two of them fell back into the same pattern as they had on set—Chu Zichen constantly ordering Su Ning around over the tiniest things. The coffee was too hot, too bitter, not his style.
Su Ning knew he was doing it on purpose, and Chu Zichen wasn’t even pretending otherwise. He didn’t take a single sip before declaring it wrong and demanding a new one.
After the first swap, Su Ning stopped actually changing the coffee. He’d just take it out of sight and bring the same cup right back.
Might as well treat him like a cranky toddler.
When Gu Lingfeng came home from work, what he saw was Chu Zichen sitting on the sofa like royalty, barking orders, while Su Ning was crouched on the floor with a cloth, wiping up spilled coffee.
Gu Lingfeng’s brows furrowed slightly.
Chu Zichen noticed him first and instantly switched personas. The arrogance vanished in a blink, replaced by a soft, delicate look as he flounced toward Gu Lingfeng like a little bird.
“Lingfeng, you’re back. I’ve been waiting so long for you.”
“What are you doing here?” Gu Lingfeng’s expression was unreadable. Chu Zichen’s heart skipped a beat, worried he’d seen too much. So he quickly spoke first, playing the victim.
“I just finished filming an episode of the show, and you didn’t even visit me, so I had no choice but to come find you.” Then, in a more petulant tone, he added, “Lingfeng, what kind of assistant did you hire? Clumsy and careless. I asked for a cup of coffee and he deliberately made it scorching hot. I spilled it, nearly burned myself—look—!”
He held out his flawless arm, smooth and pale like jade, not a blemish in sight. Not even a mole, let alone a burn.
Usually proud of his skin, Chu Zichen wore a slightly awkward smile, but still refused to let Su Ning off the hook. Clinging to Gu Lingfeng, he kept complaining.
“Lingfeng, you didn’t see how arrogant your assistant was just now. He acts like he owns this place, even told me I wasn’t welcome here. Isn’t he just a personal assistant? Basically a glorified housekeeper. What gives him the right to boss me around?”
