AD Chapter 40
After that day, Gu Lingfeng often didn’t come home at night. Su Ning knew that Chu Zichen was still filming with the crew, so Gu Lingfeng probably wasn’t with him.
This kind of thing had happened before. Gu Lingfeng had so many lovers. Even if they weren’t regular lovers, it was completely normal for him to occasionally hook up with someone during a night out. From what Su Ning knew, one of Gu Lingfeng’s former lovers was a college student who hooked up with him while working at a bar and later became his kept man.
Su Ning sometimes wondered—what kind of person could ever hold on to a man like Gu Lingfeng? He had stayed by Gu Lingfeng’s side for more than four years and had seen all sorts of outstanding people, but no matter how exceptional they were, not one of them had succeeded in keeping Gu Lingfeng. None of them even managed to stay around for long.
Maybe this man really was like his name—like a free, untamed wind that no one could catch.
But then again, whatever Gu Lingfeng was like, it had nothing to do with him.
Su Ning shook his head with a smile and started counting his savings again.
All in all, Su Ning felt that returning to Gu Lingfeng’s side had been a pretty comfortable experience. Gu Lingfeng was full of stamina and often left him completely exhausted in bed, but his skills were good—tiring, yes, but always pleasurable. And when he came back, Gu Lingfeng had given him a big red envelope. He didn’t say much, but Su Ning understood it as extra compensation for being assigned to assist Chu Zichen.
Holding that thick red envelope, Su Ning smiled with satisfaction. He wouldn’t mind doing it all over again.
When Gu Lingfeng once again didn’t come home for the night, and Su Ning received a call telling him to bring Gu Lingfeng’s clothes early the next morning, that was when he found out Chu Zichen’s drama had wrapped. Chu Zichen hadn’t even stayed for the wrap party—he’d taken a late-night flight back to be with Gu Lingfeng, eager for a night of passion.
It was hard to say what Su Ning felt about that. Or maybe, he didn’t feel anything at all. Calmly, he handed the clothes over to Chu Zichen, feeling as if everything had returned to its usual rhythm.
—Back when Gu Lingfeng used to spend nights at Chu Zichen’s place, Su Ning often had to make these kinds of delivery runs. He would even act as Gu Lingfeng’s chauffeur the next day.
Chu Zichen was wearing an oversized shirt as sleepwear, several buttons undone, revealing marks on his skin.
He made no effort to hide those marks—in fact, it felt intentional, like he wanted Su Ning to see them.
As someone who had been in bed with Gu Lingfeng just a few days ago, Su Ning of course recognized what had left those marks. He didn’t feel jealous—he just found Chu Zichen’s behavior both baffling and childishly ridiculous.
So what if he had slept with Gu Lingfeng? Trying to mark your territory this way—especially toward someone like him—was just laughable. Su Ning honestly thought Chu Zichen had completely misread the situation: not only did he not understand himself, he didn’t understand Su Ning either.
To Gu Lingfeng, both of them were nothing more than insignificant nobodies.
Gu Lingfeng was in the shower. Chu Zichen blocked the doorway and wouldn’t let Su Ning in. After showing off his love bites, he even threw down a line of provocation.
“Su Ning, don’t think just because Lingfeng let you come back that you should feel proud of yourself. You’re just an assistant—I’m the one who’ll stay by his side and spend the rest of my life with him. You’d better know your place and stop dreaming!”
Su Ning really wanted to tell him that the one who didn’t know their place was him. What on earth gave him the illusion that, as a lover, he could stay with Gu Lingfeng forever?
Everyone in the circle knew Gu Lingfeng wasn’t the kind of man to be loyal or devoted. Su Weiwei had managed to become his only fiancée purely because of her family background. What did a nobody like Chu Zichen have to hold onto Gu Lingfeng? There had been lovers before who were far more famous and accomplished than Chu Zichen—even award-winning actors—none of them could make Gu Lingfeng slow his steps in seeking out new pleasures.
Chu Zichen wasn’t even A-list—where did his confidence come from? Comparing himself to Su Ning? Then he was truly stuck in his own delusions.
No matter what Su Ning felt deep down, he didn’t argue back in front of Chu Zichen. He simply kept a polite smile and said, “Please let Mr. Gu know I’m waiting downstairs.”
With a slight bow, he turned and walked away.
Chu Zichen didn’t get to see the shattered, devastated expression he’d hoped for. He scoffed bitterly, turned, and walked back inside with Gu Lingfeng’s clothes.
Su Ning waited in the car for a while until Gu Lingfeng came down. Chu Zichen clung to his arm, pressing himself against the man like he couldn’t bear to part.
Su Ning got out of the car and opened the door for Gu Lingfeng. Gu Lingfeng turned back and patted Chu Zichen’s face. “I’m leaving. Be good, go back now.”
Chu Zichen held onto his arm tightly, pouting and whining, “Lingfeng, when will you come over again? My drama’s wrapped anyway. How about I come find you instead?”
Gu Lingfeng pulled his arm away and gave him a flat look. “You’ve got a variety show lined up. Focus on your work.”
With that, he ignored Chu Zichen and got in the car. Su Ning gave Chu Zichen a polite smile and followed.
That smile was meant as nothing more than basic courtesy, but to Chu Zichen, it was a blatant provocation. Not only had he failed to get Gu Lingfeng to promise anything in front of Su Ning, he now felt like he’d lost face—his teeth clenched in fury, and he shot a vicious glare at Su Ning.
Su Ning, confused by the glare, just shook his head and ignored it, starting the car.
After they had driven for a while, Gu Lingfeng, who had been sitting quietly in the back seat, suddenly asked, “What did Chu Zichen say to you just now?”
Su Ning froze for a second, then realized Gu Lingfeng was referring to what happened when he went upstairs to deliver the clothes. But… wasn’t Gu Lingfeng in the shower then? How did he know Chu Zichen had said something?
That thought flashed through his mind, but Su Ning didn’t dwell on it. He simply replied, “Nothing much. Mr. Chu just said hello.”
Gu Lingfeng glanced at him through the rearview mirror and gave a faint hum, sounding somewhat displeased.
Su Ning looked genuinely puzzled. He had no idea what he’d done to annoy the boss this time.
