Meng Jiangtian poured some water from a bottle into a bowl and handed it to Qi Tianshan, saying, “Heat this water up.”
“What about the pot? I can’t heat two things at the same time,” Qi Tianshan explained nervously, afraid of angering Meng Jiangtian.
“The pot is fine; it’ll be too mushy if we keep cooking. When Cui Xisheng wakes up, you can heat his food again. For now, just heat this water,” Meng Jiangtian replied.
“Alright,” Qi Tianshan said and quickly heated up the water.
When he handed the bowl to Liu Anna, he kindly reminded her, “The bowl is very hot, so leave it here and drink it later.”
“Thank you.” Liu Anna forced a smile, not even looking at the bowl of water. She continued to cling to Meng Jiangtian, “Jiangtian, there’s so much porridge in the pot. Cui Xisheng can’t finish it all; can’t you give me some?”
“I want some too,” Meng Jiangtian replied, not looking back, as he went to find a pot lid to cover the pot.
Liu Anna pouted and stomped her foot, kicking up some dust on the floor. “But there are still plenty of bags of rice, and if this runs out, you can cook more. Jiangtian, we grew up together. Don’t you want to give me some porridge? Right now, I’m the only one you have; you can’t ignore me.”
Liu Anna tugged at his arm, her big eyes filling with tears as she spoke. What started as a playful attempt to get his attention turned into a genuine feeling of sadness.
“Because we grew up together, and because you’re the only one here now, I haven’t held you accountable for what you’ve done. Anna, I’ll take care of you, but you can’t use our relationship to hurt the people around me,” Meng Jiangtian responded directly, his tone firm.
“In a few days, when my power increases, I’ll go back to find my parents. If you want to come with me, I’ll take you home. But if your parents haven’t turned into zombies or haven’t been killed, I’ll leave you with them. I won’t protect you anymore, so behave yourself. For now, I won’t abandon you.”
Liu Anna’s tears froze at his words. She had planned to ask about Meng Jiangtian’s relationship with Cui Xisheng, but before she could, he had already said it. Meng Jiangtian had essentially confirmed the worst possible answer, and she didn’t know how to respond.
Meng Jiangtian sighed and was about to leave. He was upset with Liu Anna for helping the student council president steal food meant for Cui Xisheng, but he wasn’t going to treat her as harshly as the president.
As he walked away, Liu Anna suddenly shouted from behind, “Meng Jiangtian, what is your relationship with Cui Xisheng?”
Her loud voice caught everyone’s attention. Everyone knew Meng Jiangtian cared deeply for Cui Xisheng and had been speculating about their relationship. Now that they had a chance to hear the answer, they all held their breath, waiting for Meng Jiangtian’s response.
Meng Jiangtian turned around, aware of the gaze of everyone around him. He smiled at Liu Anna and said, “He’s the one I love.”
In the post-apocalyptic world, he didn’t have to hold back anymore. It felt liberating to openly declare something he’d wanted to say for a long time.
The crowd was silent. Most of them had already guessed this and weren’t surprised, but Liu Anna felt a sharp pain in her chest. She had given up everything to return to find Meng Jiangtian, only to have another man take him away from her.
She regretted not staying with her rich boyfriend abroad. Even though he hadn’t awakened any powers, at least he had a bit of status. The student council president had too little authority for her taste, but with that rich boyfriend, her life would have been a lot better.
Liu Anna’s regret was evident as she glared at Meng Jiangtian. “If he’s the one you love, what about me? Wasn’t I your girlfriend?”
“I’ve always treated you as a sister,” Meng Jiangtian replied plainly.
“How is that possible?” Liu Anna’s voice quivered with disbelief. “When I came back, you promised me we’d be together. You even admitted I was your girlfriend and introduced me to your friends, showing me your world. Was all that just pretending to be affectionate?”
“Yes, all of that was to hide his existence. I deliberately acted like we were in love to cover things up,” Meng Jiangtian said bluntly. He looked at Cui Xisheng, whose breathing had become irregular. It seemed he was about to wake up, but Meng Jiangtian wasn’t sure how much he’d heard.
“You used me?” Liu Anna shouted, her voice seething with anger.
Cui Xisheng, still pretending to be asleep, was confused. So Meng Jiangtian had admitted that Liu Anna was his girlfriend, but Liu Anna seemed more upset than he expected.
“What exactly did you use me for?” Liu Anna continued, her anger rising. She had nearly planned out her entire future when she decided to return. Now, the person at the center of her plans, Meng Jiangtian, had changed his mind without warning. She had nowhere else to turn.
She looked around, assessing the people around her: Qi Tianshan was too meek, Zhao Huanrui was a fool who just followed others, and the student council president was selfish and manipulative. Only Meng Jiangtian had the power and the brains to protect her. But now, he was in love with someone else, leaving her with no hope of being part of his world.
Liu Anna glared at the floor, where Cui Xisheng was pretending to be asleep, before storming off in frustration.
