Meng Jiangtian had already wanted to turn around and leave. What kind of man would be thinking about his little wild cat all the time?
This kid was no longer a little wild cat. He was more like a fox spirit, one of the caliber of Daji, capable of charming anyone he walked past.
In the future, he definitely needed to find a place to hide this little fox spirit away.
"Welcome, please take a seat," the middle-aged general, Liu Shenghui, was much more composed than the younger man. He gazed at Cui Xisheng for a while before regaining his calm demeanor.
He stepped out from behind his desk and led everyone to the sofa in his office.
"Indeed, young people are more likely to awaken their abilities. These past few days, most of the awakened abilities I've seen have belonged to younger people."
"Hello, please introduce yourselves. I’m Liu Shenghui, the current manager of this safe zone. I’m a mid-level level 3 lightning elementalist."
"Zhou Yao, go get the registration forms. You all can introduce yourselves so I can get to know you, and also help you register your identity cards."
Mr. Bai handed his notebook to Liu Shenghui. Liu Shenghui flipped through it while speaking.
The young ability users obediently took a few forms, grabbed pens, and sat down, waiting for everyone to introduce themselves.
They looked at each other, and the student council president spoke first: "I’m Li Yanhong, a water elementalist. I used to be the student council president at a medical university. I’m not sure of my rank."
"We have a specialized machine here for rank testing. We’ll take you there to test your abilities in a bit," Liu Shenghui said as he glanced at Mr. Bai's notebook. The book noted that the student council president was ranked at the peak of level 1. In the early stages of the apocalypse, that was considered quite strong.
Another student council president—likely someone with leadership potential, despite their vanity and desire to take credit for others' work. But this kind of thing was common in the apocalypse. If one didn’t have the drive to fight for power, they wouldn't survive.
Zhao Huanrui wanted to introduce himself but hesitated, looking toward Meng Jiangtian for help.
Meng Jiangtian casually spoke: "I’m Meng Jiangtian, a wind elementalist. I’m not sure about my rank."
"Wang Kun estimates you might be level 2. We’ll test you soon. In the early apocalypse, there are very few level 2 ability users in the safe zone. If you are level 2, some of my plans will be feasible."
Liu Shenghui narrowed his eyes slightly after reading Meng Jiangtian’s name and the assessment of level 2. But he didn’t show it, smiling warmly at Meng Jiangtian.
Level 2 ability users, unless they had an unusual encounter, generally awakened two months ago, right when the apocalypse first started showing signs. They had two extra months to explore their abilities, so their control over their powers was likely much better than most.
In the early apocalypse, the difference between levels could be huge in battle. Even a one-level gap might determine the outcome.
"I’m Zhao Huanrui, a soil elementalist. I’m not sure of my rank either, but I’ve seen Captain Wang’s earth walls, so I think I’m about the same level as him."
Finally, it was Zhao Huanrui’s turn. He introduced himself with a hint of excitement.
This general was a new, powerful ally, much stronger than the student council president or Meng Jiangtian. Zhao Huanrui could now see a clearer future.
"Oh? The same level as Wang Kun, huh?" Liu Shenghui glanced at the notebook again. Wang Kun had rated him as level 1, and Wang Kun himself was level 2.
Liu Shenghui smiled but didn’t elaborate, looking at Liu Anna next.
Zhao Huanrui sulked and sat back down. Why was no one willing to take him under their wing? After all, he was an ability user!
"I’m Liu Anna, an ordinary person," Liu Anna answered confidently, not at all intimidated by her lack of abilities.
Liu Shenghui appreciated Liu Anna’s composure but only nodded slightly, quickly shifting his gaze to Cui Xisheng.
Finally, he could look at this child openly.
With a white, tender face and clear, innocent eyes, everything about him exuded an aura that made one want to protect him. Liu Shenghui felt an overwhelming urge to hold him in his arms and cuddle him.
But given how tightly Meng Jiangtian was guarding him, their relationship was clearly not simple. If Liu Shenghui wanted to have the child for himself, he’d have to plan it out carefully and not scare the boy away.
Liu Shenghui quickly weighed the pros and cons, and his gaze softened even more, becoming like that of a caring elder looking at a younger family member.
"My name is Cui Xisheng, I’m an ordinary person," Cui Xisheng introduced himself without hesitation.
Although Liu Shenghui had been scrutinizing him, there wasn’t that disgusting look in his eyes. In fact, the general’s expression was rather kind. Cui Xisheng felt a bit relieved and grew fond of Liu Shenghui.
"Cui Xisheng, that’s a very nice name. Where is your family from? Have you been able to contact them?"
Liu Shenghui spoke more to Cui Xisheng, making Liu Anna feel increasingly upset. Why was this man so interested in Cui Xisheng? Everyone was treating him politely, but Liu Anna was getting nothing but indifference.
"Mine’s from the Northeast, and I haven’t been able to contact my family," Cui Xisheng said, a deep worry filling his voice as he thought about his family. But as an ordinary person, there was nothing he could do but worry.
"There’s a safe zone in the Northeast too. I can help inquire about your family," Liu Shenghui said enthusiastically.
"Really? You can help me find my family?" Cui Xisheng looked up with bright eyes, his round pupils sparkling like two clear pearls.
"Of course," Liu Shenghui smiled even more warmly.
"Then please ask about my family. My mom is Jiao Yaqing, and my dad is Cui Zhen Guo," Cui Xisheng leaned forward, his face clear as day to Liu Shenghui.
Liu Shenghui’s heart skipped a beat as he took in the sight of Cui Xisheng’s face. The boy’s bright eyes seemed to shine straight into his soul.
For a moment, Liu Shenghui’s heart raced wildly.
He’d been attracted to young, beautiful girls before, but he had never felt this way about anyone, not even his wife.
"Okay, wait here. I’ll go ask," Liu Shenghui hurriedly stood up, a little flustered. He quickly walked back to his desk and picked up the phone to make a call.
"Do we have signal now?" Zhao Huanrui looked curiously at Liu Shenghui as he dialed, asking Mr. Bai.
After the apocalypse, electricity was gone, and all communication devices were useless. Zhao Huanrui had discarded his own phone after it died.
"That’s a satellite phone. It doesn’t require ground-based stations to make calls. You should get one if you go on missions outside," Mr. Bai explained.
"A satellite phone, huh? How much does one cost?" Zhao Huanrui asked, intrigued.
"64,000 contribution points for one, 10,000 for the connection fee, 1,000 for the satellite phone card, and 12,000 annually for communication fees," Mr. Bai listed off the prices.
Zhao Huanrui’s excitement instantly deflated. The phone’s usage fees were mostly in the thousands!
