"Say it," Meng Jiangtian said, sitting on the sofa with Cui Xisheng as he looked at the student council president.
The student council president glanced at Cui Xisheng, seemingly reluctant to let him hear what he was about to say.
Meng Jiangtian chuckled coldly, holding Cui Xisheng's hand and caressing it. "Don't waste my time with useless excuses, don't force me to use other methods to make you talk."
The student council president took a deep breath, hesitant to speak, but then looked at Cui Xisheng, hoping he would understand and leave.
Cui Xisheng saw the warning in the student council president's eyes, and his irritation flared. This pretentious hypocrite only bullies the weak. When he couldn't defeat Meng Jiangtian, he tried to threaten him.
Being treated as an easy target angered Cui Xisheng. He didn't care much about the so-called secret the student council president had, but now, he didn't want to leave.
He turned to look at Meng Jiangtian, the one who would make the final decision.
Meng Jiangtian wrapped his arm around Cui Xisheng's waist and smiled at him. Then, he turned his gaze back to the student council president, his smile turning sinister. "President, are you trying to stall for time?"
A gust of wind surrounded the student council president’s neck, swirling around him like a butterfly in the air.
"I’m not stalling," the student council president said, looking at the wind with no choice but to give in.
Acknowledging Cui Xisheng's presence, the student council president began, "Before the apocalypse, I received news that those in charge already knew about the abilities of the ability users and the zombies. As for who those in charge are, you should know.
The apocalypse didn’t happen overnight; zombies and ability users started appearing two to three months before. Not only humans became zombies, but some animals and plants mutated as well. These mutations were sometimes even stronger than humans.
The higher-ups had already established several safe zones, preparing to shelter humanity after the apocalypse. They had also devised laws and regulations for the post-apocalyptic world. One of these rules is that ability users cannot attack other ability users.
Ability users are the most valuable force in the fight against zombies and mutated animals and plants. No matter what an ability user does, even if they’ve committed murder or are guilty, it’s up to the higher-ups to handle them. Ability users cannot kill other ability users without authorization.
Meng Jiangtian, your rank is higher than mine, but there are some ability users who awakened their powers before the apocalypse, and their level is likely higher than yours.
You can mess with ordinary people all you want, but you can’t casually harm an ability user. If the higher-ups find out, you’ll be punished."
"Well, that sounds reasonable. If it’s true, I really won’t dare to touch you," Meng Jiangtian said, rubbing his chin, studying the student council president.
"I’m telling the truth. The ability users in the safe zones are now searching for newly awakened ability users and rescuing humans who haven’t turned into zombies to bring them to the safe zones.
The nearest safe zone to us is not far, and they should be coming here soon.
Meng Jiangtian, no one can survive alone in the apocalypse. Humans are social creatures. Only by uniting can we survive. And to gain a foothold in the safe zone, you need merit.
Money is useless now, but in the safe zone, the currency used is contribution points.
As long as we protect the people upstairs, when the ability users from the safe zone arrive, we’ll be credited for saving them. Our contribution points will be high, and our status will be better than those ordinary ability users.
Meng Jiangtian, don’t you want to give Cui Xisheng a stable life?
Once we’re in the safe zone, with the protection of ability users, you won’t need to worry about his safety. You’ll have enough time to do your own thing.
The snacks in the supermarket won’t last long. Eventually, we’ll run out of them. But in the safe zone, as long as you earn enough contribution points, you won’t have to worry about food anymore.
We took the food you left for Cui Xisheng, but it’s for our future. Also, you’ve caused enough trouble these past few days. If we keep starving, someone will die.
If the safe zone people find out we starved several ordinary people, they won’t do anything to you, but your contribution points will drop drastically.
These people will remember their lesson and won’t mess with Cui Xisheng again. Just give the food to them."
The student council president spoke from the heart, sincerely revealing most of what he knew.
However, he kept some things to himself, like the matter of the crystal cores.
His brother had told him that contribution points in the safe zone could lose value, but crystal cores never would. They were like gold, hard currency.
The student council president had secretly collected several zombie crystal cores. With these, he believed that his contribution would be higher than Meng Jiangtian's when they reached the safe zone. His status would surpass Meng Jiangtian's.
When he met his older brother, with a strong backing, that’s when he would begin his revenge.
The student council president’s words sounded almost like a story, and both Meng Jiangtian and Cui Xisheng were stunned.
They exchanged glances, half-believing, half-doubting.
"No wonder someone as selfish as you can be so self-sacrificing and selfless during the apocalypse, helping those ordinary people without asking for anything in return," Meng Jiangtian remarked sarcastically.
He didn’t fully believe the student council president, but the recent strange behavior of the student council president seemed to make sense with this explanation.
The student council president, embarrassed by the insult, glared but didn’t dare to argue back.
Just as Meng Jiangtian was about to ask more, a loud knocking came from outside the door, and Qi Tianshan urgently shouted, "Meng Jiangtian, the people on the roof have gone crazy! They’re fighting over the food, and I can’t stop them!"
Meng Jiangtian's expression darkened. He stood up abruptly and walked toward the door, but the student council president stopped him, saying, "Meng Jiangtian, the people from the safe zone should be here soon. Don’t act impulsively."
"Hmph, impulsive? Today, I’m going to show you what impulsive looks like," Meng Jiangtian scoffed, pushing the student council president aside.
But Cui Xisheng stopped him, saying, "Don’t kill them. If you don’t want to share the food, just throw it down to them."
Cui Xisheng wasn’t a saint; he wasn’t trying to save those people. He just didn’t want Meng Jiangtian to have too many lives on his conscience.
The more people he killed, the less he would value life. Cui Xisheng didn’t want Meng Jiangtian to become a killer, someone who used his abilities to kill indiscriminately.
The fire of anger inside Meng Jiangtian was quickly extinguished by Cui Xisheng's soft voice. He felt weak all over, and he took Cui Xisheng’s hand. "I’ll listen to you. I won’t kill them."
After giving Cui Xisheng a gentle kiss on the forehead, Meng Jiangtian opened the door, pushed Qi Tianshan aside, and stepped out.
