"Cough, cough, cough...!!!" Qin Kong nearly choked when he heard those words. What?! His singing was nice?! Did that mean his neighbor had been listening to everything crystal clear?!
This was bad. The real pregnant woman upstairs had already moved out, but this fake pregnant woman next door had been listening all along! And it was just—just—a single wall between them!
Even though he should have been happy about the compliment, he somehow felt like crying instead.
Just thinking back to when he had been singing at full volume, even shouting, "Hey, pregnant lady next door, are you okay?!" during his high-energy moments, made him feel extremely awkward. No way... Had that been heard too?!
Wu Ming saw that Qin Kong seemed "shocked," probably because he had remembered something embarrassing. Smiling slightly, he continued, "The pregnant lady upstairs moved out a long time ago. You didn’t know?"
"Cough, cough, cough, cough...!!!" Qin Kong nearly spat out his food. Why bring that up now?!
Wu Ming looked at him. "..."
"S-Sorry! I ate too fast!" Qin Kong quickly said.
"Drink some water, don't rush." Wu Ming poured him a glass of water. Even a good person had their moments of mischief—on the surface, he looked very concerned, but deep down, he was secretly enjoying this moment of payback. Finally, I’ve gotten my revenge. That’ll teach you to call me a pregnant woman every day!
Qin Kong ate his meal with mixed feelings. To make up for it, he enthusiastically said, "Leave it to me!" and washed all the dishes. He wasn’t even this diligent at home.
As he left, carrying his things, he sincerely said, "Thanks for the meal."
That genuine expression, mixed with a little guilt, made Wu Ming’s heart tremble—Aww, did I do something wrong?
Back in his own apartment, Qin Kong rushed to his computer and posted on Weibo:
CV Qing Kong: Today, my kind-hearted neighbor invited me to dinner. He even praised my singing! I feel both happy and embarrassed… 😢
Wu Ming replied—
No Name: Hmph, the neighbor probably knows you called him a pregnant woman too!
Qing Kong: You hit the nail on the head…
That night, when Qing Kong was singing on his livestream, some fans requested high-pitched songs, but he refused without hesitation, saying, "No way, my neighbor will come knocking."
The chat exploded:
"What if the pregnant lady next door gets too excited and goes into labor?!"
Qing Kong whispered, "Shh, that’s why I need to keep it low-key. I’ll sing something softer for you all."
Wu Ming smiled: Even if you keep it low-key, the 'pregnant lady' next door can still hear you.
That night, Qin Kong tossed and turned in bed. His mind suddenly conjured an image of his neighbor knocking on his door and saying, "Dummy, can you keep it down?"—sending chills down his spine.
It took him a long time to finally fall asleep, but then he had a nightmare—Wu Ming, with a huge pregnant belly, saying, "Dummy, I’m going into labor."
Qin Kong woke up in a cold sweat, horrified.
Looking at the alarm clock, he realized he had woken up an hour earlier than usual. As his mind wandered, he started wondering if he’d run into Wu Ming on the way to work. Then he thought about the food Wu Ming had cooked. Then, suddenly, he realized Wu Ming was quite good-looking, had a nice personality, and—seemingly—didn’t have a girlfriend...?
The moment he became aware of where his thoughts were going, he silently picked up his phone and posted on Weibo—
[CV Qing Kong: Oh no, I think I might like someone.]
The next morning, Qin Kong ran into Wu Ming again. Today, he seemed especially friendly. Usually, he just greeted him in passing, but now he was chatting a lot.
"Did you eat breakfast? You should always eat breakfast. Going to work on an empty stomach is bad for your health."
Wu Ming patiently answered each question, but found it odd. Why is Qin Kong in such a good mood today?
That evening, after work, Wu Ming opened Weibo and saw that post. His heart skipped a beat.
He sat up straight, took a deep breath, inhaled, exhaled. So, he has someone he likes now... No wonder he seemed different this morning. It’s okay... Dummy has his own life. Just being able to see him is already luckier than most people. I should be content.
He commented—
[No Name: That person must be really amazing! Wishing Dummy happiness!]
Then, he leaned back in his chair, unable to say another word.
For the next few days, Wu Ming was out of sorts at work, looking exhausted and sluggish.
The person he had been "secretly in love with" suddenly had someone they liked. It wasn’t exactly like heartbreak, but he still felt a little down.
Lost in this haze, he didn’t notice when the cold wave hit—and he won the unlucky lottery.
The moment he woke up, he felt sore all over, sneezed several times, and his throat felt like it was filled with rocks. His head was dizzy. He touched his forehead—fever.
Struggling to sit up, he called his company to request leave, then rummaged through his medicine box for some fever reducers. After taking one, he felt weak all over, and even swallowing was exhausting.
After drinking some water, he groggily drifted back to sleep. When he woke up again, the sky was already dark. He touched his forehead and gave a bitter chuckle—his fever hadn’t gone down at all. If anything, it had gotten worse.
People always get extra emotional when they’re sick, and Wu Ming found himself thinking about all sorts of things.
His fevered brain drifted to the apartment next door—What’s Qin Kong doing? There hadn’t been any singing tonight. Did he post anything on Weibo? What kind of person does he like? Probably someone cute, right? Once he falls in love, he’ll probably spend more time with them. He’ll be online less, sing less...
He suddenly really wanted to see Qin Kong.
He knocked on the wall. Is he home? Thud, thud, thud.
Qin Kong was at home, lying in bed reading a novel, relaxing for once. Suddenly, he heard knocking from the wall.
Is he knocking again?
Thinking it was just another prank, he grinned and knocked back— Thud, thud, thud.
Wu Ming heard the response and felt a little happy. He quickly sat up, but the moment he tried to stand, his vision blacked out. He lost his balance and— Bang!
"Ow!" He clutched his head, sitting back down in pain. Just my luck…
Qin Kong had been waiting for another knock but instead heard a loud thud, followed by a pained groan. His heart jumped.
What happened?!
He anxiously pounded on the wall. "Hey! Hey! What happened?!"
No response. He started panicking.
He shouted at the wall, "I’m coming over right now! Open the door for me!"
Dashing out of his apartment, he ran to his neighbor’s door and frantically rang the doorbell. "Wu Ming! Wu Ming! Open up! Are you okay?!"
Wu Ming, still a little dazed, had just wanted to say he was fine, but hearing Qin Kong anxiously pounding on his door—almost like he was ready to break it down—he quickly wobbled over and opened it.
Panting slightly, he said, "I just hit my head. I’m fine."
Seeing Wu Ming standing there, Qin Kong let out a breath of relief—but immediately got angry. His cheeks were flushed, his brows furrowed, and he looked utterly displeased.
Wu Ming looked pale, his forehead burning hot, and his hands icy cold.
"You call this fine?! You have a fever!"
