MFSOWAA Chapter 4: I Am Different from You

Xia Lin didn’t sleep well all night. He always had a bit of trouble sleeping in unfamiliar places.
He had a chaotic dream. He couldn’t remember the details, but one scene was crystal clear: his ex-girlfriend, ex-boyfriend, and Kane all gave him double red envelopes, each one gratefully thanking him for being a successful matchmaker who helped them find their true love.
When he woke up, Xia Lin sat up in bed, grabbed a pillow, and hurled it out with all his strength, roaring, “F*CK YOU ALL!”
Then, the pillow gently arced through the air and landed on his own foot.
A mundane day began with busyness.
The equation “business trip = vacation” had never existed in Xia Lin’s life. He only knew two types of business trips: busy and busy as hell.
Right now, he was hovering on the blurry boundary between human and dog, wanting nothing more than to say goodbye to the shameless exploiters.
Of course, if he had money, that was.
“Go to the project team on the eleventh floor and find Anthony. His report is missing a signature,” Xue Zenan instructed, utterly devoid of human compassion. “There are ten minutes left until the end of the workday, so hurry.”
The last word was enunciated with particular clarity.
Xia Lin had just returned from the thirty-second floor, and seeing Xue Zenan still busy discussing project implementation with the team leader, his resentment faded a little.
If even the director was working like a dog, how could he have the nerve to act like a human?
Run, Xia Lin! For the sake of money!
“Hello, I’m looking for Anthony.”
The cubicles on the eleventh floor housed at least twenty people, and Xia Lin had no hope of recognizing Anthony at a glance.
“Xia Lin?”
A familiar voice came from an office on the right. Even if he were deaf, Xia Lin would recognize that voice just by the vibrations in the air.
Some things had to be faced head-on.
Like an ex-boyfriend.
Like Kane.
That alpha who successfully mated with an omega stood confidently on the branch office’s turf. The gleaming plaque on the independent office door read “General Manager’s Office.”
The world was just that cruel. No matter how down-and-out Xia Lin’s life was, there were always people who became winners in both love and career.
Even if that person was a cheating, heat-driven scumbag.
“Who’s looking for me?”
A stranger—Anthony—rescued Xia Lin from his awkward predicament.
Finally freed from having to respond, Xia Lin regained his voice. “Uh, I’m from the Western District branch. Our director said your document is missing a signature.”
Anthony took the document and flipped through it before immediately apologizing. “Sorry, I should’ve checked more carefully.”
He raised the papers in his hand and signaled, “Boss, you forgot to sign.”
Kane nodded. “Let Xia Lin bring it in.”
Let Xia Lin bring it in and assign it to Xia Lin to handle—those used to be the top two most common tasks in Xia Lin’s work log.
For those he valued, Kane always increased their workload to toughen their resolve.
If nothing had happened afterward, Kane would have been a dedicated and responsible leader. Xia Lin had learned a lot from working under him.
But once personal agendas tainted it, every social event Xia Lin had attended—banquets, dinner parties—felt downright disgusting.
“How have you been?” Kane asked, head down, flipping through the document he had already read.
Great, still chatting online, browsing the web, saving up for a house, still single, haven’t turned into a dog, and congratulations on finding a better match and getting married soon. Congrats to you, and bless me too!
Xia Lin ran through these thoughts in his head, but he didn’t want to say a word.
Even if it had been a relationship he had sincerely embraced, badmouthing Kane just to save face would have been too petty.
“If the General Manager is done signing, I’ll be going.”
Kane silently stared at him, confirming that Xia Lin really didn’t want to answer, then handed over the document.
“Thank you…” Xia Lin said, but he noticed Kane wasn’t letting go.
“Xia Lin.” Kane gripped the other end of the document and stood up, his tall frame pressing in on Xia Lin. “I truly loved you.”
Hearing that, Xia Lin’s heart filled with a thousand expletives.
What kind of sick joke was this?
Unable to hold back, he raised his voice angrily. “Oh, thanks a lot! I’m doing just fine. I even have a new boyfriend. Hope you treat your omega well. We’re even now. All that nonsense ends here. Can we be done, Kane?”
“No…” Kane was desperate to explain, but when he heard certain words, his emotions spiked. “You have a new boyfriend?”
“Sorry to interrupt.”
Xue Zenan’s voice, accompanied by a knock on the door, came from behind. “Long time no see, Kane. I heard from the project lead that you got promoted. Congratulations.”
Kane’s agitation vanished instantly. In front of outsiders, he always maintained a perfectly cold exterior.
“Xue Zenan? So you’re with the Western District branch now.”
“Yes.” Xue Zenan said. “Is the document signed? We’re in a hurry.”
That sentence was Xia Lin’s lifeline.
The document in his hand was finally granted freedom.
Xia Lin, overwhelmed with love and admiration for his boss, practically sang praises in his mind as he hid behind Xue Zenan.
“You heard the rumor too?” Kane’s gaze never left Xia Lin.
Xue Zenan replied, “Congratulations on finding your destined omega.”
Xia Lin’s back tensed.
That “blessing” felt like a needle, every single word stabbing into the softest part of his heart.
These alphas were like beasts fighting for mating rights, stopping at nothing to claim the omega they deemed worthy. Throughout history, nothing had ever changed.
Then, he heard Xue Zenan say:
“But I’m different from you. I hate omegas.”
Tsk.
Xia Lin let out a cold laugh.
Alphas—what a bunch of lying bastards.
