HIM Chapter 39: "Then why don’t you kiss me?"
Inside the car, his song “Play for Fun” was playing on repeat. He was singing after the bass faded: “Spring nights are short, so enjoy the fun.”
Bo Qin thought, There’s no fun in this for me. I just want to hold on to a piece of love.
Dusk was falling. The last trace of twilight cast a soft light on He Xizhou’s profile, making it hard for Bo Qin to read his expression. He swallowed and tried to steady his voice. “You were right to bring out that agreement from the start. I—”
Bo Qin's words caught in his throat because He Xizhou hugged him.
The man’s embrace was broad and warm. He Xizhou’s hot breath brushed against Bo Qin’s ear, and Bo Qin found himself thinking vaguely: This is our second hug.
“No,” He Xizhou’s voice was low and deep, his bass tone vibrating right into Bo Qin’s ear. Bo Qin heard him say, “That was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”
“Xiao Qin,” He Xizhou held him tighter, so tight it hurt, but Bo Qin couldn’t care less—he could hear their heartbeats, heavy as drums, slowly syncing together.
He Xizhou buried his face in Bo Qin’s neck and said, “From the moment I saw you at the venue, I was wondering if I should confess to you.” He began trembling. It was the first time he realized that a moment of great happiness could make someone dizzy. “When you walked toward me, my heart seized up. But I was too stupid. I told myself: this is Bo Qin. He’s seen so many confessions like this.” His voice actually started shaking. “I thought my confession was too rushed, not romantic, no flair at all.”
He Xizhou’s warm breath licked at Bo Qin’s neck and ear. Bo Qin even had the illusion that the next second He Xizhou would kiss him—but it was just an illusion.
He Xizhou let go of him and looked Bo Qin in the eyes. His gaze was bright as always. He could’ve said a lot more, but what came out instead was: “I like you.”
Bo Qin looked at him. “Then why don’t you kiss me?”
The kiss landed when Bo Qin’s vision went dark—because He Xizhou had covered his eyes with his hand. He laughed lowly. “Looking up at someone like this is just deadly.”
The moon finally emerged from behind thin clouds, its light pale and gentle. Even the wind seemed to slow down. Bo Qin felt dizzy, hearing the man’s low chuckle: “You want me to kiss you, but you don’t even know how to breathe during it.”
Bo Qin looked up at him, wrapped both arms around He Xizhou’s neck, and with a commanding air, pulled the man’s head down. He tilted his head and kissed him.
The shadows of trees danced in the wind, bringing with them the scent of flowers that filled the courtyard. The wind-blown shadows swayed across the window, behind which two lovers were kissing.
“Play for Fun” reached its final line, Bo Qin singing: “Everything is lovely, and lovers are in love.”
